This month we got to do something special in Queenstown, we celebrated the graduation of the second cohort of the Queenstown Leadership Academy.

Over the past year, this group did the hard yards:
- showing up despite long days at work
- stress-testing new tools in real situations
- coming back each month with stories of how they applied the lessons learned, back in their workplace.

They started the program as strangers, but finished as a team, and, more importantly, as friends.

A huge acknowledgement to:
Each participant, who chose to lean into being challenged, and chose growth over comfort.

Their business mentors who gave time, insight and honest feedback across the entire program.

The Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce for partnering with HALO Training and working together to design a leadership academy built in the community, for the community, with the community.

This academy isn’t a loose collection of guest speakers, It’s a deliberately designed, structured leadership program tuned to the realities of leading in Queenstown’s unique business ecosystem.

A special thanks to Kelly McAteer, Sharon Fifield, and Rachel Clifford from the Queenstown Business Chamber for all their hard work and making the Academy possible and accessible. Something’s been bothering me for a while now.

We keep calling it leadership development.

But what we’re really doing is simply giving people information and hoping they figure out how to execute it, back in the workplace.

That’s not leadership development.

That’s a gamble.

Over the past few years, I’ve worked with thousands of leaders across Aotearoa. From boardrooms, to worksites, and to back paddocks, one thing is clear:

We don’t need more complex theory.

We need leadership that can be executed in the workplace, when it matters.

Over the last 18 months, I’ve been working quietly on something new.

Not a model.

Not a rebrand.

A leadership philosophy built from experience, refined through real-world testing, and shaped by the pressure that strips away everything except what’s real.

It's not ready to be released...yet.

But it’s close.

I believe it’s going to shift the conversation.

At Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa, leadership means never losing sight of why they exist: Creating lifelong memories for their guests.

We had the privilege of working alongside the full leadership team from Hilton Queenstown at the amazing Millbrook Resort, and what stood out most was their attitude.

Not once did they default to ‘good enough.’

Not once did they fall back on their brand reputation alone.

They showed up as leaders who own the guest experience at every level, and who challenge themselves to stay connected to the moments that matter most, the little touches that create unforgettable stays.

This team’s commitment to leading, not just managing, the guest experience was inspiring to witness.

They reminded us that leadership isn’t about titles, it’s about presence. It’s about staying connected to your people, your guests, and your purpose, no matter how busy or pressured the day gets.

At HALO Training, we were honoured to support their journey, but the credit belongs to them.

The most damaging behaviour in any organisation isn’t incompetence. It’s unchecked entitlement.

The person who’s always late, without apology.

The leader who interrupts, deflects, and refuses feedback.

The leader who demands change from others but never looks in the mirror.

This kind of behaviour doesn’t start loud. It creeps in when standards are avoided to keep the peace.

It takes root when leaders tolerate disruption to avoid discomfort, and before long, a whole team is navigating around one person’s ego.

The real damage?
– Teams go quiet.
– Accountability disappears.
– High performers leave.
– Culture becomes reactive, not resilient.

Leadership isn’t about being liked.

It’s about having the courage to say:
“This behaviour is not acceptable, and we won’t build our future around it.”

Because what we enable, we endorse.

The standard we walk past, is the standard we accept.

We’re not here to regurgitate feel-good corporate buzz words.

Most leadership courses never talk about this.
