Wellesley’s Composite Year 7/8 Class

Some boys thrive when they’re given the freedom to explore a topic they’re genuinely passionate about. That’s exactly what happens in Wellesley’s unique Composite Year 7/8 programme.

Over two years, boys move from ‘Apprentice’ to ‘Mentor’, developing independence, resilience and leadership while completing a year-long Independent Study on a topic of their own choosing. From cybersecurity and microcontrollers to Nelson Mandela, the Battle of Trafalgar and the guitar, every project reflects the curiosity and interests of its author.

The programme develops advanced literacy, research and critical thinking skills as boys evaluate sources, interview experts, defend their ideas and present their findings with confidence. By the end of Year 8, they have completed a substantial dissertation that prepares them well for college and beyond.

The programme is led by Kent Hainsworth who has taught at Wellesley for the past 10 years and was himself a Wellesley student from 1977 to 1981, finishing as the school’s Best All Round Boy. Kent holds degrees in English, History and Creative Writing, including a Master of Arts from Victoria University of Wellington’s renowned International Institute of Modern Letters.

🎬 Forget Hollywood…the biggest stars were at Wellesley! 🌟🏆

Last week we rolled out the red carpet for our inaugural Year 7 Oscars Celebration, recognising the creativity, collaboration and filmmaking talent of our boys.

From documentaries and dramas to action films and comedies, the audience was treated to an incredible showcase of original productions before the finalists took centre stage for the awards ceremony.

There were laughs, suspense, standing ovations and plenty of memorable moments along the way!

A huge congratulations to our Best Motion Picture winners, as well as our equal second-place and third-place recipients.

Every Year 7 filmmaker should be incredibly proud of what they achieved. The quality of storytelling, editing and technical skill on display was outstanding.

A special thank you to our wonderful judges (who fully embraced the occasion!) for making the celebration such a fun and memorable event.
