Innovative Young Minds Innovative Young Mind's programmes encourage young women in Years 11 and 12 to explore science, technology, engineering & mathematics opportunities.

During IYM's programmes, participants will be exposed to eye-opening and inspiring science and technology content and will learn about the wide range of research and career opportunities available in STEMM. Participants will also make lasting friendships with like-minded young women who share a passion for STEMM! IYM's programmes are only open to young women, because females are underrepresented in the STEMM sector and we want to change that. Our goal is to inspire a new generation of female innovators and industry leaders.

Each year at IYM Online and IYM Residential we run an Innovation Challenge thanks to our amazing trustee Paul Newsom.

The 2026 IYM Residential Innovation Challenge asked students to tackle fire detection head-on, sponsored by Pertronic Industries, the Wellington-based company behind the fire alarm systems protecting many of New Zealand's new commercial buildings.

Come join us for the IYM Satellite in the Wairarapa, a hands-on opportunity to look at a variety of careers in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and High Tech Manufacturing).

Running on Thursday 8th October 2026 9.30am - 3pm at Wairarapa Events Centre (Carterton) as part of Carterton Space Week, https://www.wairarapa.space/carterton-space-week/. IYM Satellite is an immersive, in person experience designed to inspire and connect young women with real-world STEMM pathways in the Wairarapa region.

During the day, you will meet local experts working in a variety of STEMM Industries. Come engage directly with scientists, engineers, researchers and innovators. Hear about their career pathways and the work they are doing.

Places are limited! You must be a young woman in year 11 or 12 attending a Wellington region school and be able to make your own way to the Wairarapa Event Centre. This is a first come first served application process, applications will close when full.

Today on Spotlight Sunday we are farewelling Trustee Allan Brown.
When Hutt Valley Rotarian, Allan Brown, helped start IYM 10 years ago, he wasn’t trying to create just another programme. He wanted to change lives. And he’s done just that for well over a thousand of young Kiwi women.
