With the government’s proposal to ban social media for under-16s, it’s more important than ever that we stay informed before jumping to conclusions.
Rob and Zareen Cope offer some confronting, valuable insights into the online world our tamariki are navigating. Their documentary “Our Kids Online: P**n, Predators, and How to Keep Them Safe” is now freely available on YouTube:

"This is our therapy. This is where we come as men, as husbands, as fathers to share and support each other on our journeys. The Therapeutic nature of these wānanga is invaluable"

The above quote is from my full interview for Te Karere following our wānanga this week. I have drawn so much confidence, leadership and resilience from my experiences at Mokoia Island Taiaha Wānanga. I will forever be grateful!

And just like that... It's been one year since receiving our Mataora.

One of the most asked questions I get is "has there been any change to the way people treat/talk to you?"

The answer is yes! I've found people feel more comfortable to talk about te Ao Māori with me. They feel safe to ask questions. But the coolest change is that learners of Te Reo Māori feel empowered to practice thier Reo with me... in the most random places!!! It's pretty cool.

When our Mataora was complete, I sat up and my first mihi was to my wife. This moko was the most physical pain I've experienced, and it didn't come close to the pain my wife went through during childbirth... Three times! So thank you Samara! For your support, your love for co-ownership of this taonga and everything that comes with it.
I love you baby xx

When it comes to End of the Year functions... It got a bit lonely being self employed (and the only one). So for the past years I've celebrated with my Whānau in Papamoa at Tahatai Coast School. Unfortunately because of Covid and commitments, this year I couldnt make it up. So this year I'm throwing my own company function with my number 1 team. My three inspirations and my biggest supporter.

I've still got one more session to run in Prison tomorrow before I'm officially done for the year, but tonight we celebrate 12 years doing the mahi!

Jahdyn, like his pāpā, even stood up and did his pepeha before giving me a lovely kete of gifts to celebrate the occasion.

He Māori Ahau programme enhances the mana of Māori learners – Education Gazette 02/09/2021

Earlier this year I took a big step away from teaching Kapahaka with the support of my wife, to focus on my other programmes: He Toa Taiohi (The Young Warriors) and my absolute passion "He Māori Ahau" (I am Māori).

Below is a feature article on "He Māori Ahau" in the latest edition of the Education Gazette.

He Māori Ahau programme enhances the mana of Māori learners – Education Gazette A wellbeing and positive identity programme is supporting English-medium schools to provide a culturally safe and identifiably Māori space in which tauira Māori are supported to feel good about being Māori. Education Gazette joins the programme in action at Randwick School in Lower Hutt.
