BE SAFE, BE SEEN!
Interesting experience last week. A few of us were paddling fairly early in the morning, in an easterly direction. Directly into the sun, basically. We were in our local estuary (Kerikeri Inlet), and because the tide was very low, we were following the main channel.

As always, although relaxed and enjoying the paddle, as detailed in book II of the SUP safety series, I'm always subconsciously monitoring the environment for change. And suddenly I became aware that something wasn't right. I looked round behind us, and sure enough, a boat was coming up the channel at high speed, directly towards us.

He absolutely hadn't seen us; in that low sun, we were completely invisible. (Indeed, it's just as well that we weren't a kayak, or a smaller dinghy - he was for sure, going way too fast for those conditions). I quickly got everyone else's attention and we paddled to the side of the channel, and waved our paddles above our heads to try and make ourselves more visible. The skipper did then pick us up and to his credit, immediately throttled back, and came past us very slowly, apologising profusely.

So, a good reminder that low sunlight can be dangerous. However, my main takeaway was that once again, trusting your senses is so important. The boat's engine was super quiet but their wake was just lapping onto the shallower water each side of the channel, and that was the extra noise I'd picked up on, that hadn't been there before. The key to being safe while out on the water is being aware of changes in your environment, and always on the lookout for anything unexpected.

How do you teach SUP safety to young people? We invited the youngsters from Harvest Christian School in Kerikeri to help us with this challenge, and create a video that got the most important safety messages over in a fun and easy-to-follow way. This is the result. We think it's awesome, and we'd love you to show it to any SUP-keen youngsters you know.

Stand up paddleboarding is awesome fun, but things can go wrong if you don't follow the SUP SAFE code. The year 7 & 8 akonga from Harvest Christian School…

From a poll of over 100 NZ paddlers recently carried out, hardly anyone was carrying a whistle. It's actually one of the very best comms options, and there really isn't any reason not to carry one - it takes up no appreciable space and weighs next to nothing.

Just make sure it's easily accessible. Carry it on the outside of your PFD or beltpack strap, so you can get your hand onto it instantly. Put a thin elastic lanyard onto it so you don't lose it.

Just how dangerous is SUP really? It's a question we often get asked, with the assumption that if we've written a whole series of books about how to stay safe, it must actually be pretty damn dangerous! But it's really not - especially when you compare it to other recreational activities. Check out our latest blog, and feel reassured...

Leash or buoyancy aid – which is most important for SUP?
Up until fairly recently, the answer to this question would have been straightforward and unanimous; the leash, every time. Pretty much the entire SUP industry has been united behind the ‘leashes save lives’ campaign. However, over the last few years, the anti-leash movement has gained momentum, and we're now seeing a lot more confusion, misunderstanding (and indeed misinformation) on the subject. Check out our latest blog post for the full story, we'd love to hear what you think!

Think about that water temperature!
Winter is fading into the rear view mirror, the air is warming up and paddleboarding is creeping back onto the agenda. However, it’s really important to remember that the water is still really cold – particularly on inland lakes. And if you fall into cold water you are at risk of cold water shock, which claims many lives around the world every year. Read our blog article on how to prevent yourself becoming a victim of cold water shock. http://sup-safety.com/think-about-that-water-temperature/

Book 3 of the SUP SAFETY series is now available on Amazon in ebook form. This one is about planning, preparation, and what to do when things go wrong, and is one for every paddleboarder to read (and discuss!), no matter how well versed you are in general safety. We'd love to hear your thoughts, particularly in regard to incidents that you've experienced, and how they played out, in relation to the discussions and recommendations in the book.

Some very interesting research which absolutely backs up what we say in Book One about the risks of using a quick release leash if you don't actually know how to use it properly.
