Last week, many of us had the privilege of celebrating the annual Mīharo Murihiku Polyfest, a showcase of culture, talent, and dedication.

We cannot express enough how incredibly proud we are of our Toa Moana and Te Pou Herenga boys for their outstanding performances on Wednesday and Thursday night. We know just how much time, effort, and commitment they put into preparing for the event, spending countless weeks practising and putting in the mahi. Seeing all that hard work come together on stage was truly something special. Well done boys! You should all be very proud of yourselves.

A special thank you also goes to Matalaoa for her unwavering support in helping guide and prepare the boys. Your encouragement played a huge part in their success, and we are incredibly grateful for everything you have done.

We would also like to acknowledge the Mīharo Murihiku team, and all of the volunteers and helpers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Events like this simply would not be possible without your dedication and commitment to our rangatahi and communities. Thank you for all the work you do, including capturing and sharing photos and memories from every performance for whānau and supporters to cherish.

We are sure families throughout Southland are feeling immensely proud and thankful as they watch these talented young individuals represent themselves, their schools, and their cultures so beautifully.

Today at our Junior Values Assembly, we proudly celebrated Parker Swain as this week's recipient of the Junior Values Cup for demonstrating Manaakitanga.

Parker is an outstanding member of his class who consistently shows respect, honesty, and compassion towards both his teacher and classmates. He also displayed these values exceptionally well throughout Deep Cove Camp, setting a wonderful example for others.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. Keep up the great work! 👏🏆

Celebrating Our Science & Technology Fair Students!

A huge congratulations to all of our students who took part in this year’s Science & Technology Fair!

Taking a project from an initial idea through research, planning, testing, problem-solving and presenting is no small achievement. Our students showed curiosity, creativity and a willingness to investigate how and why things work.

We are especially proud to celebrate those students whose projects were recognised with awards. Their success reflects the time, effort and commitment they put into their projects.

James Breetzke's project Power from the Pantry won two awards. A bronze award and a special SIT award for Science.
Cooper Finnerty's project on AI in communications won a bronze award.
Jacob Hogg got an award of Commendation for his project on reactions between Magnesium and different acids.

Congratulations to all of our participants and award winners! You represented SBHS with pride and produced some impressive work.

📚 Study Hub Update
Study Hub is moving to Monday afternoons, 3:15–4:30PM, at the SBHS School Library, for the remainder of Term 3. Teachers and peer mentors will be available to provide support, or you can use the quiet study spaces if you simply need somewhere to focus and get some work done. Light refreshments provided! 🥤

⭐ SPECIAL CAA STUDY HUB – WEEKS 6 & 7 ⭐
Year 10 and Year 11 students preparing for their upcoming CAA exams can also attend a special Study Hub session on Thursdays (27 August and 3 September), 3:15–4:30PM, at the SBHS School Library. Teachers and peer mentors will be available to help with CAA preparation and questions.

Come along, get some work done and make the most of the support available!

Last week we celebrated our fantastic SBHS library and the important role it has within our school for Aotearoa NZ School Library Week.

Eleven teams from Year 7 and 8 put their book knowledge to the test in a lunchtime lit quiz, with 713 taking the win for Year 7, and 820 getting the honors for Year 8, and the most points overall.

Other activities included a competition to match the VIP staff member or prefect with their favorite book, a book to movie screening, and to end the week we invited some reading role models to visit us in the library.

Southland Stags and SBHS Old Boys Jimmy and Jack Taylor, and Mika Muliaina, along with Jayden Henderson and Jay Reihana answered questions about their earliest reading memories, their favorite books and genres, followed by a quickfire round of questions such as; bend the corner of the page or use a bookmark? Skim read or read word for word? Read on a device or actual book?

The students asked some incredible questions both reading and rugby related and we finished with our antlers up to wish them luck for the game against Waikato.

What a fantastic win they had too!
