The Week That Was is here!

From Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and WIMS Basketball to welcoming our exchange students from Nouméa, there was plenty happening around Berkley this week.

Thursday also saw our top speakers take centre stage for the School Speech Finals after making their way through class and Team Finals.

THE WEEK AHEAD | WEEK TEN, TERM THREE 2026

Here’s what’s coming up at Berkley next week:

🗓️ WEDNESDAY – 23 SEPT
After spending time with us at Berkley, we farewell our visitors from Nouméa as they begin their journey home.

It’s been fantastic having them as part of our school community, and we hope they head home with plenty of great memories from their time in New Zealand.

🗓️ THURSDAY – 24 SEPT
This afternoon we’ll be saying a big thank you to our Winter Sports coaches, managers, and helpers at a special 4.30 pm afternoon tea for those who have supported our teams throughout the season.

So much of our school sport simply couldn’t happen without the time, energy, and support they give our students!

🗓️ FRIDAY – 25 SEPT
It’s the final day of Term Three!

We’ll finish the term together with our whole-school assembly before everyone heads away for a well-earned break.

Have a fantastic holiday, Berkley — enjoy the break and we’ll see you back for Term Four!

And after that… Term Four — the final term of 2026 — begins on Monday 12 October, with school starting at 8.45 am as usual.

🎭 FROM TEAM FINALS TO THE BERKLEY STAGE.

Yesterday, our School Speech finalists had one more chance to put their writing, preparation, and presenting to the test in front of the audience and judges.

Charlie and Charlotte went behind the scenes for Berkley NOW — talking with finalists before they took the stage, hearing some of the speeches themselves, and catching up with the winners afterwards.

AIMS GAMES 2026 | RESULTS & HIGHLIGHTS

What a week for our Berkley AIMS Games team.

120 Berkley students competed in Tauranga alongside around 14,000 students from schools across Aotearoa, with some outstanding results across a huge range of events.

Among our Top-10 results:

🥇 1st — Gymnastics Bar: Ella R

🥈 2nd — 5 v 5 Boys Basketball

🥉 3rd — Boys Individual Trampoline: Vincent G
🥉 3rd — Boys Double Mini Tramp: Vincent G

4th — Girls Badminton Singles: Neela VN
4th — Golf Boys, 18 holes: Pearse L
6th — Golf Team, 18 holes
7th — Girls Water Polo
9th - Rock Climbing: Lachlan S

Finalist — Girls 200m Breaststroke: Charlotte C

There was plenty more to celebrate across the week too:

There were also a number of personal bests in swimming, along with plenty of effort, perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship from students across all of our events.

A huge thank you to the coaches, managers, parents and supporters who gave their time and energy to help prepare, organise, transport and support our students throughout the week. Taking 120 students to an event of this size is a massive undertaking, and it simply wouldn’t happen without that support.

And congratulations to every student who represented Berkley. Whether your week finished with a placing, a personal best, a new experience or simply knowing you gave it everything — we’re proud of the way you represented our school.

WIMS BASKETBALL | DOUBLE CHAMPIONS 🏀

A fantastic result for Berkley, with both our Boys and Girls basketball teams winning their WIMS competitions yesterday.

The Boys progressed through a semi-final against Maeroa before meeting Fairfield in the final, while the Girls came through their semi-final against Cambridge before taking on Maeroa for the title.

To have both teams finish the day as champions is a brilliant achievement and a real credit to the players, coaches and everyone who has supported them throughout the competition.

MAKUHARI EXCHANGE | THEY’VE ARRIVED! 🇯🇵

Our Makuhari exchange group was up very early on Monday morning, beginning their journey at around 4.30 am NZ time.

After a big day of travelling, they arrived safely in Japan at around 11.30 pm NZ time last night — tired, but very excited for the two weeks ahead!

We’ve heard they were awesome on the journey over, and now the real adventure begins: new experiences, new people, a different culture and plenty of memories still to come.

We’re looking forward to following along and seeing what the group gets up to over the next fortnight.

Spring was definitely in the air at Berkley this week.

Maths branched out into probability, economics learning continued to grow, writing turned over a new leaf — and Friday brought everything into full bloom as all five teams came together for Super Five.

Here’s what’s coming up at Berkley next week:

🗓️ MONDAY – 14 SEPT
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori begins, giving us another opportunity to celebrate and use te reo Māori across Berkley throughout the week.

Also on Monday, our Makuhari group departs for Japan. We wish them an amazing trip and look forward to hearing about their experiences!

🗓️ TUESDAY – 15 SEPT
Our basketballers are back on court for WIMS Basketball, representing Berkley against schools from across the Waikato.

🗓️ WEDNESDAY – 16 SEPT
We welcome our visitors from Nouméa, who arrive at Berkley on Wednesday afternoon.
We hope they have a fantastic time experiencing life at Berkley and getting to know our school community.

🗓️ THURSDAY – 17 SEPT
Our Team finalists take to the stage in the Performing Arts Centre during Blocks 1 and 2 for the 2026 School Speech Finals.
Expect big ideas, brave voices and a few nerves as our speakers step up for one of the highlights of the term, with whānau there to support!

Congratulations to our Berkley basketball team who have just made the final of the NZAims games basketball competition wining 39-37.

This is a huge accomplishment out of the top 84 year 7-8 teams in the country. Congratulations to the boys and also their amazing coach Mr Jason Hanson. Good luck for the final tomorrow. We’ll be cheering for you.

TIPU AKE | CELEBRATING WHAKAIRO, WHAKAPAPA AND WHĀNAU

A special Berkley moment to share!

Through the Tipu Ake carving programme, our ākonga have the opportunity to learn whakairo while creating their own taonga — developing not only their carving skills, but exploring whakapapa, identity, whanaungatanga and a sense of belonging along the way.

The finished carving is only one part of the journey. It takes patience, perseverance and plenty of care to take a piece from its beginnings through to something that carries meaning and can be held with pride.

At the end of our last programme, whānau joined us at Berkley for a special celebration as our students shared the taonga they had worked so carefully to create. Seeing the finished pieces — and the pride of both ākonga and whānau — made it a pretty special occasion.

With another Tipu Ake celebration coming up soon, this felt like the perfect time to look back and acknowledge the mahi of our previous group.

Ngā mihi nui to Matua Rei Mihaere and everyone involved with Tipu Ake for the knowledge, time and care they share with our rangatahi — and congratulations to our ākonga on something they can be very proud of.
