Month of May Recap! ☀️

What a massive month for our hostel community! From cultural triumphs to nail-biting sports, here is a quick look at our May highlights:

🎭 Cultural Triumphs: Kapa Haka
Huge congratulations to Fraser Gray for leading our Kapa Haka group to a Top 2 finish at the Super 8 Cultural Festival! He was accompanied by Caol Paoo and new member Kahi Dromgool. They will now turn their focus to the National Kapa Haka Competition. Absolute legends!

Pink Shirt Day: Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu
We stood together to speak up, stand out, and stop bullying! The hostel turned into a sea of pink as our boys proudly supported Pink Shirt Day. It was a powerful reminder of our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and kind environment for every single boarder.

🏆 MAC Competition: The Comeback!
The MAC competition is officially neck-and-neck as Bennett crawls its way back into contention! With Futsal, Tug-of-War and a General Knowledge out of the way, the leaderboard is tighter than ever. Game on!

🍽️ Boarding Life: Dinner Swap
We had our very first dinner swap with Sonninghill this term! It was a fantastic night packed with fun, games, and great food shared between both boarding schools. Thanks for the awesome company, Sonninghill!

🏉 Auckland Grammar Exchange
The annual exchange was an absolute nail-biter, with every single team facing incredibly close encounters on the field. After a hard-fought day of intense competition, the exchange ended in a perfectly split 8-8 draw! Way to leave it all out there!

ARGYLE TAKES THE TITLE! 🪢🏆

What a week! The gym was absolutely electric for the House Tug of War competition, and our Argyle family showed up, showed out, and put their muscles on the line! 💪🔥

Here’s how the battle went down:

Junior Competition: Total dominance by Argyle! Our juniors pulled together and left no doubt about who owns the rope. 😤
Senior Category: A massive effort from our seniors, though Steel managed to sn**ch the win in this round. 🥈
Overall Champions: When the dust settled, Argyle took the overall title once again! 🥇

A huge shoutout to every single person who pulled for the house!

📈 The Leaderboard Update:
The house points have been updated! While Baigent wasn’t in the winning circle for Tug of War, they’re still maintaining a strong overall lead... for now. 😉

Next up: The House General Knowledge Quiz this week. Let’s trade the brawn for brains and keep this momentum going!

Victory at St Paul’s! 🏆

Argyle House showed up in force last night to support the 1st XI Hockey team! 🚌

Between the debut of our new Student Supporters Group and the backing of the 1st and 2nd XV Rugby squads, the sidelines were buzzing.

Our 1st XI fed off that energy and put on a masterclass, walking away with a 3-1 victory winning the Matt Allan Memorial Cup.

Well done to the coaches and the boys on an amazing performance! 👏

Champions of the Court! 🏐🏆

Gym 1 was the place to be on Tuesday night for a fiery Matthew Allen Cup volleyball showdown!

It was a night of high-energy play, but Sutherland rose to the occasion, taking the win over Bennett in front of a rowdy crowd. The highlight of the night? Captain Luke Phillips triumphantly lifting the shield high for Sutherland! 🛡️✨

The house spirit was unmatched, huge congrats to Luke and the entire Sutherland team for bringing it home!

🏉 Sporting Spotlight: Lachlan Morgan

While the touch season has officially wrapped up, Lachlan Morgan is finishing on a high note. Lachlan recently captained the Ngā Wai Rau U16 squad in the inaugural New Zealand Youth Homegrown Touch Series. Under his leadership, the team dominated the competition to take the overall win, and Lachlan’s standout performances earned him a well-deserved spot in the Tournament Team.

Lachlan’s success on the touch field is a natural extension of his passion for rugby. A key member of last year’s U15A Rugby side, he played a vital role in the team’s impressive 3rd place finish at Nationals.
Whether he’s leading his touch team to a title or battling on the rugby pitch, Lachlan’s talent and leadership continue to shine.

Congratulations on an incredible touch season, Lachlan, we can’t wait to see what’s next! 🫡

🏆 Bennett Wins MAC Rowing

What a night at the Matthew Allen Cup! It was a total nail-biter as Sutherland and Bennett went neck-and-neck all evening. 🚣‍♂️💨

The competition was as tight as it gets:
• Junior Race: Taken by a strong Sutherland crew.
• Senior Race: Claimed by Bennett to even the score.

With the standings deadlocked, it all came down to a high-stakes tiebreaker featuring students who hadn’t yet hit the machines. In a true “underdog” performance, Bennett dug deep and secured the final win!

With that gritty effort, Bennett officially claims the Matthew Allen Cup and moves into an 8-6 point lead. Massive props to all the rowers and Mr Kennedy for driving the event. What an incredible show of sportsmanship and speed! 🏆🙌🏼

Argyle House continues to produce excellence, with three Old Boys making strong strides in the New Zealand rugby pathway.

Leading the way is Ollie Mathis, who was called into the Crusaders squad and rushed to Australia, where he made his Super Rugby debut against the Western Force, a major milestone highlighting his rapid rise into the professional game.

On the national stage, Alex Arnold has been named in the New Zealand Under 20 squad, while Dallas Rata-Makene has been recognised in the wider national group as a non-travelling reserve, a strong reflection of his talent and potential.

Together, these players showcase the strength of Argyle House and the HBHS rugby pathway, continuing a proud legacy of success beyond the school gates 🏭
