Please check out the latest podcast here https://www.nurturedinseasons.co.nz/the-parent-grid-podcast/ What is the best parenting style.

If you are in Waikato, NZ, you can listen on the repeat broadcast at FreeFM89 on Saturday, 9-930AM. Happy Friday everyone!

Whether we do it consciously or not, we all parent based on our childhood. We think about how we were raised and from there we apply what we think is best for our own family- either we embrace what our parents did to raise us, refine it or completely change it.

What are the things from your childhood that you embraced or changed when you became a parent?

Today at the Fonterra Wellness expo. I'm finally taking on my brave hat to go out and talk about what I do to help other parents on their parenting journey. It was a great learning experience on marketing, outreach and networking. On to the next one, a public presentation at our local library. Details coming soon!

PS: I was too shy to ask other exhibitors to take a photo of me at my booth. I'll throw away the self-conscious hat next time and put on my braver hat. 😉

Today, here in the southern hemisphere, we celebrate winter solstice. It marks the onset of winter, on the shortest day of the year. It's the celebration of the sun in winter.

As we celebrate light in this season, it is timely to reflect on our intentions this year, look at the lessons we learned so far and the look forward to tomorrow.
--------------

Winter solstice is still a foreign concept for me who grew up in the tropics. As the years gone by, my family have slowly created traditions around the solstice and equinox. Today we pruned our fruit trees and collected some of those branches for our seasonal table. We also planted our garlics.

We changed the decorations on our seasonal table and included a landscape from one of our trip before the children came along. The children loved hearing these stories, excited hearing the things we did before we had them. We lighted a candle and spoke about how from today the days will slowly be longer and there will be more light until we get to spring. We read a book about winter and finished the celebration with a simple dinner.

Initially, I was thinking of big things but this simple ritual we did helped me centre myself and celebrate what matters, being with family.

Do you have some traditions celebrating the winter solstice?

I never thought I'll be excited reading a gardening book. I particularly liked the Green Urban Living by Janet Luke as she talked about how to include children when gardenign throughout the book.

From the time they can walk, my children have been involved with gardening. It's a great way for them to connect and understand nature. Weeding is a simplest form of activity to teach cooperation, and in doing so you get the best chats with your children.🌱👦👩

Last summer we started our vegetable garden with limited success, hence the books to learn. 😊 This autumn, we have a big project of converting our front lawn into a more functional mini urban orchard🌳🌳🌳. Watch the space as I share some of the work we did and how we got the children involved.

Tag a friend who love gardening with their children. 😊

"... but for now I'll just be here with you"

Oh, how there are a million things to do
And I’ll do them, I will
I’ll do those things too
But right now
I’ll just be,
Here,
With you.

Oh, how I want to sleep, I do
And one day, I will
I’ll sleep right through
But right now
I’ll just be
Here,
With you.

Oh, how the days are long, it’s true
Yesterdays are many
But todays are a few
So, I’ll fill them up
With all of you
And simply be,
Here,
With you.

"Discipline is a dance between a child and an adult..."

Wouldn't it be nice if we view discipline as a partnership rather a battle of will and power?

In a world where there is just so much things to do with so little time, it can be convenient for adults (not just parents) to scoop up a child and do something so we can move on to the next task. Today I am humbled when my almost 2-year-old child reminded me of this during nappy changing. She kept saying "nah" when I told her it's time to change. I was getting frustrated but knew that it will be more challenging if I simply scoop her up to change. Then I remembered... I said "it's time to change, I'll wait for you in your room, " paused and waited. The "no" became hold mama's hand and let's go to the room together.

Trust your child and trust the situation... imagine you and your child dancing together in this calm, rhythmic tune of family life.

We are fortunate to have found a place near the river and had a bonus having a neighbor with some friendly donkeys... always a hit with the children.

Today, we went out for a nature walk along the river. We stopped and take in all nature offered us. We listened as our feet crunched the drying leaves on the path. We looked to admire the changing colors of the leaves. We touched and felt- the ground, the drying leaves, the water by the river, and patted our donkey friends. As the season changes, I help my children understand the rhythm of the nature through simple activities like today.

While it is easy to pull out a smartphone or a tablet and show them these things, experiencing things makes more impactful learning for younger children. If we want to raise ecoliterate children, we have to let them experience it.

Today I challenge you to put down that screen and commune with nature. Happy Earth Day.
