The "off" season. It can be pretty special.
Recoup, socialise, do fun things, explore, get outside, be less structured, be active whilst being less sport specific.

Train smart on your lunch break.
Reducing your swim time on each rep = increasing speed. These sessions are great for pace management and speed variation ensuring you don't just plod.
Plodding is pointless.

proving it's never "too late" and you're never "too old" to make a comeback...
It's only been 4 months of consistent, specific training and his sessions speak for themselves.
Last week's 10km race was a big win for many reasons: Constantly chipping away, laying the foundations, getting stronger, faster, smarter, more confident.
And working on the pain face.

One word that will improve your performance:
CONSISTENCY.
🔸️Consistency over days, weeks, months, years. Keep building your base brick by brick.
🔸️There are no shortcuts, consistency is key to building your endurance foundation.
🔸️Repetition is how we build the consistency. We build our base and repeat it, aiming to get a bit more efficient each time.
🔸️Consistency means regularly doing the work, that doesn't mean thrashing out hero sessions every other day and then skipping the next.
🔸️Building consistency is the only way to build yourself as an athlete.
HOW?
🔹️Schedule. Sounds like a no brainer right? Know what you're doing each day and when.
🔹️Plan ahead. Have a holiday or work meetings coming up? Plan for them.
🔹️Be realistic, identify triggers. If you know it's unlikely you're going to turbo for 90mins after work on a Friday then plan differently.

Trail vs road.
What surface should we train on?
For a long time we've been told that the trails are better for reducing the load on the body compared to pounding the tarmac day in day out. Especially when we're involved in an endurance sport that places a lot of stress on the body anyway.
Most of the top triathletes I've trained with have done a lot of training on trails.
Why?
🔸️Variation of terrain both for physical (strength) and mental benefits
🔸️Softer surface
🔸️Enjoyment
🔸️Technical skills and stability
🔸️Access
With that said, what terrain will you be racing on? A lot of tri's these days have a road run in which case you'll want to be prepared to perform well on this terrain. Specificity.
E.g if your main even is Kona the body needs to be able to cope with a marathon, on tarmac, in brutal conditions. In this case you'd better get used to running on the tarmac!
Efforts on the road are consistent, repeatable and generally accessible and you can argue that they reduce the risk of injury that can occur due to uneven surfaces of the trail.
So back to the original question, what surface should we train on?
I always prefer the majority of run training to be done off road (that could still be a hard packed trail). However some run sessions on road can be beneficial AND it depends on the event the athlete is training for AND their training and injury history.

Plan: Long "easy" run in the hills. Practice fuelling.
Result: Fabulous photos with a hint of tired happy legs. No stomach issues.
Every session has a purpose and it's not necessarily to get a good pic for the gram 😉
