The aim is to empower communities to feed and care for each other by developing a long-term, resilient community resource based on earth care, people care and fair share. The idea for the 'Trees for Homes' programme was sown during the 2012 Australasian Permaculture Convergence in Turangi. It finally saw the light of day a year later when Vanessa Witt created this page, bought the domain
name and started by giving away some fruit trees from her family nursery business, the Greenhaus. The thinking behind the programme is based on the permaculture ideas of zones, with a focus on supporting people to develop the Zone 1 area around their home for healthy food production. The ultimate goal is to promote the ethics of earth care, people care and fair share through ensuring communities are full of productive perennial food crops that they are willing to share. At this stage, Vanessa is implementing the programme in her local areas of Taihape to Feilding and the places in between.
