Trees for Homes

Trees for Homes 'Trees for Homes' helps people in Aotearoa grow useful trees in their home gardens.

The aim is to empower communities to feed and care for each other by developing a long-term, resilient community resource based on earth care, people care and fair share. The idea for the 'Trees for Homes' programme was sown during the 2012 Australasian Permaculture Convergence in Turangi. It finally saw the light of day a year later when Vanessa Witt created this page, bought the domain

name and started by giving away some fruit trees from her family nursery business, the Greenhaus. The thinking behind the programme is based on the permaculture ideas of zones, with a focus on supporting people to develop the Zone 1 area around their home for healthy food production. The ultimate goal is to promote the ethics of earth care, people care and fair share through ensuring communities are full of productive perennial food crops that they are willing to share. At this stage, Vanessa is implementing the programme in her local areas of Taihape to Feilding and the places in between. Did you know that now is a great time to plant trees?
Trees planted in autumn have the longest time for their roots to get established before next summer's dry spell arrives.
If you buy a fruit tree now, it has probably had a season to grow in the pot or bag and should have a root ball already established. A little later in the season (July), garden shops will have their new fruit trees arriving. This will give you a bigger range to choose from, but many (especially deciduous ones) are likely to be bare-root trees that have just been lifted from the ground and potted. You will need to make sure that the new season's bare-root trees have their tops pruned to better match the roots that have been pruned to fit in the pot. Without having their tops pruned, newly potted or planted trees are likely to struggle to get growing in the spring. It may seem harsh to cut the branches of a new tree back, but you will get a much better result in the end.
