Learning Design is gaining recognition as an evolving, standalone profession, distinct from the traditional view that it is merely a task undertaken by teachers. There is a rapidly growing, worldwide audience for online learning, with educational technologies and platforms becoming increasingly available, accessible and AI-enabled. Students' needs for social connection and community transcend these easy offerings and have led to the exploration of complementary approaches in the design for online learning, including, but not limited to, the integration of Ako and other indigenous approaches.
