Congratulations to Paul Johnson, the recipient of the inaugural OP Unifone Innovation Award, which celebrates 'outside the box thinking in information technology'. Paul is a highly motivated first-year Bachelor of Information Technology student. His creativity and technical skill distinguish him from others. In his spare time, he has independently developed an application that translates spoken language into New Zealand Sign Language. This project shows his innovative thinking and a strong sense of social responsibility.

Each year the Information Technology School staff and students hold an end-of-year Showcase to celebrate the achievements of their third-year students. This year we had a great turnout of friends, family and people from the local IT industry who enjoyed enlightening talks presented by the six Studio teams about their projects and achievements. After the presentations, guests had the opportunity to learn more about the projects and chat with the students in a mini trade show: each team had their own booth at which they showed off the highlights of what they built. The evening had a great vibe and we did some valuable networking over a drink and some nibbles.

Huge and well deserved congratulations to Hazel Mapuranga, the 2026 recipient of OP Information Technology's Women in IT Scholarship, which offers a boost of $2,000 towards study fees. We had a very high standard in our applicants and this was a tough call but we believe that Hazel is an inspiring vision for the future of women in IT and really put a huge amount of effort into her application. Well done Hazel :-)

t was a typical Dunedin spring day on the 12th September for the Otago Polytechnic graduation ceremony. Sunshine, wind, rain and even a bit of hail made an appearance for the walk from the Dental School to the Dunedin Town Hall, along with a few hardy lecturers, who proudly (and bravely) marched alongside our graduating BIT students. The weather didn't appear to ruin the mood and everyone had a fabulous day. All the very best to our graduands, of whom we are extremely proud!
