Welcome to the start of 2020. We had a very busy year last year with lots of different programmes and a number of schools that we had not seen for awhile. We continue to offer our popular Stepping Back in Time 1850, 1900 and 1950 programmes, exploring the past through hands on activities and role plays.
We also offer our more topical programme of Sustainability, which investigates practices of our early settlers. How sustainable were they? We explore renewable energy sources, and packaging of goods as well.
You can see the full list of our programmes at
www.ferrymead.org.nz. or contact us on 384 1970.

We are hoping that someone may have this set of books.
A while ago, we had our 1860s trunk stolen from the garage we store our equipment in. We managed to find new things for the programme, but we would like to get a copy of the book taken.
It was from this series but called The Voyage Out.
More than happy to photocopy had information that we used in it. Thanks

Looking for Casual on Call Educator
We are looking for someone to join our education team as an on call casual staff member during term time.
Hours would generally be between 9.15-1.30pm.
The job involves delivering our education programme to visiting school groups. This does involve some role play activities. Ideally we are looking for someone with an interest in Canterbury history and an outgoing personality. A reasonable level of fitness is also required. Full training will be given for this position. This job would suit a trained teacher or someone with experience working with children. All education staff must undergo a police check.
Please send CV and application to Cindy Hey, Education Manager

A bit of History
100 years ago this month, in early October the first cases of Spanish Flu were recorded in Auckland.
On the 12th, the Troop Ship RMS Niagara returned, carrying a number of people ill with influenza. The ship was not quarantined and within a short time there was a major outbreak of influenza in Auckland. The ship was carrying New Zealand Prime Minister William Massey and his deputy Sir Joseph Ward. It has never been proven that this ship was responsible for the spread of the pandemic.
During this time in Christchurch along with other places people were sprayed with zinc sulphate. In Christchurch people had to walk through tramcars getting sprayed as they went.
Christchurch at that time had a population of 92773 and had 462 deaths from the influenza.
Hopefully next month's Bit of History is less tragic than this months.

We are getting ready to start another term, amazing how fast the time goes. We still have days available to visit during term four. Along with our Stepping Back in Time Programmes we have our Ferrymead Amazing Race. This is a great end of year team building activity with achievable challenges for all, around the park.
This term we have our Christmas Programme available. This explores the traditions of Christmas in New Zealand. This consists of Christmas Eve activities, Christmas Day Food, Carols and Games. Find out about Boxing Day and play some Boxing Day Games.

It is a good day to be inside today with the heaters going, fortunately no school was booked in. Very wet and cold here but blue sky every now and then.
We now have a lucky draw each month, that visiting teachers can go into win a bookshop voucher, for filling in one of our post visit survey forms. Congratulations to Catherine from St Albans Catholic School who won our term one draw.
We have had a variety of programmes this term from 1900s, World War One, 1950s, communications and transport.
The photo is from a school visiting last week, two of the girls examining the oven at the bakery. The other one is taking part in our 1900s School Lesson with Miss Black.
