The Future of Linwood Te Aratai Foundation
You may have noticed that you have received very little correspondence from the Foundation this year.
This, in the main is due to the illness of the Foundation’s Chair. Our past chair had a large hand in creating the Foundation along with past Principal Dick Edmundson and Trustee Ken Bye.
The Foundation was created for two reasons, one to build an extensive listing of past pupils enabling us to come together from time to time to celebrate our shared school history at significant anniversaries. The highly successful Farewell celebration we held prior to the demolition of the old school is a case in point. Secondly, the other reason the Foundation was created was to build a financial foundation which would benefit future pupils of Linwood College, now called Te Aratai College.
Since our inception we have financed the purchase of school uniforms and an annual scholarship for students who wish to attend university or other higher training has been awarded. We have also supplied funding for the school’s new weights gym and an upgrade to the sound system in the auditorium. At the time of writing, we are focussed on funding an appropriate external adornment (artwork) for the Whare. This is a major project and one of which we are sure you will be very proud. However, this project will take all of the Foundation’s existing funds and require significant support from funding providers within the community.
With the unexpected illness of our past chair combined with other trustees limited time to coordinate projects for the Foundation, it is a concerning possibility that this Whare project may be the last initiative the Foundation is able to take in support of the school and the Foundation may need to wind up.
The Foundation urgently needs additional active support from the Past Pupil community if it is to survive. The tasks needed to run the Foundation are not onerous if they can be fairly spread amongst a group of committed people, however we do need people to step forward now. In particular, the Foundation is currently without a Treasurer. To ensure its future, the Foundation needs help in planning and organising a range of activities by bringing the alumni together and establishing a closer relationship with the existing student body. For the Foundation to continue to support the current students of Te Aratai, it also needs to explore sources of revenue within the ex-student body and the wider community.

Kia ora everyone
Due to the illness of one of our key volunteers since the Foundation was created, we are now in need of one, or preferably several, volunteers to fill the positions below. We are hoping we can create a team of volunteers who will support the work of the Foundation committee, which is responsible for the continuous building of and effective running of the Foundation.

Many of you will likely remember Neil Ayrey a 1954 foundation pupil of LHS who sadly passed away last Saturday. His daughter Alison has advised us that Neil's funeral service will be held at
the Avon Park Chapel,
Kerrs Road Linwood
on Friday 5 December 2025
at 10.30am
He will be missed.

It is with sadness we provide the following three death notices which we have learnt about today.
1. Athol James Carr
Died suddenly on Wednesday June 25, 2025 in Wellington where he had gone to present a paper at a conference.

2. Advised to LCF today Alan Rose:
Obituary - From The Press newspaper
On Tuesday June `17, 2025 at Banbury Park, Care Centre, ages 85 years. Dearly loved husband of Julia, father and father- in- law of Nicholas and Karina, Bernard and Amy, and Alans and Justin Morel. Much loved Grandad of Ella and Holly; Haydn and Grace and great-grandfather of little Avery. Adored favourite uncle of all his nieces and nephews. Proud member of the LHS '54 group, sportsman, teacher, farmer, racing enthusiast and chief cook. Thank you to family, friends, neighbours and colleagues for your kindness and thoughtfulness over these past few months. It was Alan's wish to laugh and reminisce with as many of you as possible while he was able. Thank you for the memories.

A gathering to share memories was held at Oaklands, corner Halswell Junction and Wigram Roads on Wednesday June 25 at 10.30 am.

This afternoon Linwood High alumnus Mark Rocket gave Foundation members a fascinating insight into his work in the aerospace industry in Aotearoa.
We are proud of what Mark has achieved in his career so far.
