Felt by over a thousand people already there has just been an earthquake near Whakatāne. Did you feel it?

11/08/2026

📢 We've got a fresh pānui (announcement) about the Ohakune water supply situation. Thanks to Ruapehu District Council for pulling all this information together!

🙌 First, the good news - good progress is being made on recharging the network. This means water will start flowing through the system to people's taps.

❌ The bad news - you cannot start drinking the water straight out of the tap. Since the water network didn't have normal pressure for a long period, things could have got into the system which can make people sick.

WHAT DO DO

✅ Boil all water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making drinks - any situation where you'll swallow the water - for at least two minutes, then let it cool.
✅ Conserve water to help the reservoir refill.
✅ Wash your hands thoroughly if dealing with septic waste.

PREPARING FOR WATER RETURNING

💧 Make sure your inside taps are off.
💧 If you have an outside tap, turn it on and allow water to run until it's clear.
💧 Water is fine if cloudy, but not if muddy/brown. Keep the outside tap running until it's not brown.

WHEN WATER STARTS FLOWING

🚰 Run inside taps until the water is completely clear.
💧 Running an outside tap first should reduce the time needed for inside taps to clear.
🫧 Taps may initially splutter because of trapped air in the pipes. This is normal—let them run until the flow becomes smooth.
🥛 Water may also look milky or cloudy because of small air bubbles. This is fine.

WHAT TO EXPECT

🚰 Low water pressure may continue until the reservoir has refilled several times.
💨 Pressure changes can release trapped air and disturb silt in the network.
💧 Water should progressively become clearer and pressure more stable as the reservoir completes several filling cycles.
🗓️ The boil water notice will be in place until further notice.

👉 Head to the Ruapehu District Council page or our website for updates. We're also keeping media in the loop so they can spread the word. We also encourage you to talk to anyone else you may know who could be affected by this.

📲 We issued a new Emergency Mobile Alert to Ohakune this morning with a summary of this information, ensuring we reach as many people as possible. We know the alerts are intrusive, but the health risk of not boiling water means we feel sending an alert was the right thing to do.

🫶 Finally, thank you for your patience during this situation. We appreciate it's been disruptive for the community, but it looks like we're closer to getting back to Ohakune having clean and clear water again.

MetService warned that streams and rivers may rise rapidly, and that surface flooding, slips and difficult driving conditions were possible.

This is scary, there is a lot of information out there on just how destructive an event in this area would be, as well as potential for very devastating tsunamis. Worth a read if you live in the area and looking into what you can do to prepare over time to make sure you are more prepared.

A study simulating what would happen to Wellington's road network in a major earthquake has found some parts would be cut off for months.
