Tahi are learning about pets for their group inquiry, this week we are learning about horses. How Lucky are we that Gigi bought in her pet pony Molly for us to meet. She is 25 years old, loves to eat carrots and loves a good scratch!

“Children have an anxious concern for living beings, and therefore the satisfaction of this instinct fills them with delight. It is therefore easy to interest them in taking care of plants and especially of animals. Nothing awakens foresight in a small child, who lives as a rule for the passing moment and without care for the morrow, so much as this”. Maria Montessori

Our tamariki have been showing wonderful care for their environment this afternoon, working alongside their kaiako to help wash the fence with scrubbing brushes and soapy water 🫧🌿

In Montessori, caring for the environment helps children build responsibility, independence, and respect for the world around them. The tamariki were full of smiles and pride as they worked together, showing great teamwork and perseverance while making our outdoor space shine ✨

“The child can develop fully by means of experience in their environment.” – Maria Montessori

“Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua.”

Today in Te Kākano, ngā tamariki have been enjoying the outdoor environment in the ra sunshine. It is so lovely to see the connections and friendships that are blossoming within the classroom, the ataata smiles speak a thousand words.

“The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences.” - Maria Montessori

Tahi have been enjoying exploring our numeracy activities and Rylah is working hard with our hundreds board. Exploring the hundreds board supports children to recognise number patterns, sequence numerals, and develop confidence in counting to 100. Though hands on learning, tamariki strengthen their understanding of order and relationships between numbers.

“Never help a child with a task at which she feels she can succeed.” Maria Montessori.

Today in Te Kākano we had lots of fun celebrating Yee Haw day. Our tamariki transformed into little cowboy and cowgirls and enjoyed lots of hands-on messy takaro - play experiences. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the week has in store. 🤠🐄🚜

The child gives us a beautiful lesson – that in order to form and maintain our intelligence, we must use our hands.” - Maria Montessori

This week in Te Kākano, we have been introducing some early Montessori activities to our tamariki during the work cycle. They have been mastering skills like pouring, transferring and posting, strengthening their fine motor and self-help skills. ☺️

We were lucky enough to visit Rowley Primary School today. Our oldest 6 children set off ready to explore this morning. We enjoyed learning about letters P and T. We then wrote a story and drew a picture about it. Some of our children even wrote their name. Most exciting part was exploring the outdoor playground. We can’t wait to visit again next month 🥰
