"A time to release, reflect, and reset ourselves."

The recent Ngā Pou o te Tau wānanga ki Te Puke ki Raetihi marae was embraced by the strength, wisdom, and aroha of our puni wāhine. Together we gathered in a space of wānanga, connection, and renewal, taking time to pause, share, and realign ourselves with the rhythms of te taiao and the teachings of our tūpuna.

In the embrace of Te Maru o te Tau, we are reminded that there is a time to let go of what no longer serves us, to restore balance within ourselves, and to prepare for the seasons ahead. Through kōrero, laughter, reflection, and collective learning, our wāhine created a nurturing environment where growth and wellbeing could flourish.

A few weeks later and we’re still sitting with the kōrero and connection from last month’s Ngā Pou o te Tau wānanga at Taiporohenui Marae in Taranaki.

From the pōwhiri to time by the awa, it was a grounding few days, bringing together the magic of our tūpuna knowledge with the openness of the whānau who came along and participated.

We’ve been reflecting on those moments and wanted to share a few images that capture the wairua of the weekend.

And it’s a good chance to remind you that registrations are closing soon for our second wānanga!

We welcome both new and returning participants to join us in strengthening whānau wellbeing, tūpuna knowledge, and our connection to te taiao.

Hauhaketia te kūmara i te Whānui o te rangi!

It's time for Te Huatahi o te Tau, one of five seasonal ritenga being revived by iwi of Te Taiuru. It takes place in Paengawhāwhā (April–May), during the last quarter moon phase. This year, this period falls on 10–14 April, meaning that now is the perfect time to conduct Te Huatahi o te Tau.

During this ritenga we light a pre-dawn fire, cook kūmara in the embers, and offer the first to Rongo – atua of kūmara and aruhe – in thanksgiving for the autumn harvest, before sharing the rest together around the fire.

E ara Whiro o Poutūterangi – on 18 February, the new moon heralds the tenth lunar month of the maramataka, and with it, the first breath of ngahuru arrives.

Across the motu, different iwi mark this season with their own names, each reflecting the unique character of their rohe. Poutūterangi – the star Altair – rises before dawn alongside its companions in Ngā Whetū Kūmara (also known as Te Kūmara o Mataora). Our tūpuna knew that when Poutūterangi was at its zenith, it signalled the start of harvest time. This is a month of gathering kūmara, celebrating abundance, and honouring the generosity of the earth.
