Another one of our happy places; supporting teachers to integrate morphology into literacy practice from the very beginning. ⭐

How lucky are we that not only do we get to work with incredibly cool kids, but we also get to work with equally cool teachers!

This video is of a group of our teachers thanking our students for sharing their work with them and helping them learn, too! ❤️

Best job ever!

💡 Tips from a lesson today!

When teaching something new, it helps to group and contrast patterns so learners can see what changes and why.

For consonant -le, group words by spelling convention:

➡️Double: When we hear one consonant sound after a short vowel before the , double that consonant: puzzle, paddle, bottle

➡️Two consonants: We don’t double: candle, rumble, jungle

➡️Long vowel: We also don’t double: title, table, noble

By subgrouping and contrasting words, even within a single spelling pattern, we make spelling patterns easier to understand and apply.

This term we’ve had a few students working on persuasive writing, integrated into their lessons. It must be speech season!

For reading, we’ve taken a look at wants vs needs. Always a great one for engagement and some friendly banter during a lesson!

So far, we’ve had some excellent arguments for UGG boots, bananas definitely being the second-best fruit in the universe, video game credits, new pets, Christmas twice-a-year, and a robot vacuum cleaner. Honestly, we’re on board with that last one!

These are not children who are with us for extension. They are with us because they need to be.

This is what dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD and other literacy challenges can look like, and what can be achieved, with the right support.

A single suffix can unlock a world of vocab!

In this case, we were turning verbs into nouns using the suffix -ion.

decide → decision
include → inclusion
divide → division

When learners understand the structure of words, they unlock patterns that make reading, spelling, and vocabulary easier.

✨ Highlights from Sharing Best Practice ✨

Hearing from Sir James Chapman – a giant whose shoulders we stand upon in Aotearoa!

James shared how long he has been advocating for Structured Literacy approaches (longer than anyone should have to) and the data around the success it is having, even though it's early days! He also showed the data of what we have had before, which has not served our children well.

James also spoke about our need to be careful! We cannot fall into the trap of over-teaching phonics, holding children to decodable texts, or being too rigid and inflexible in our teaching. Structured Literacy is an approach, NOT a programme! This was music to our ears at TLC, and we share his concerns.

Thank you, Sir James!

✨Highlights from Sharing Best Practice!✨

Hearing Dr Olwyn Johnston deliver such crucial messages in her Keynote!

📣Yes, the changes to education are happening at a pace that is too fast. That doesn't mean the changes (at least some of them) aren't needed though, and it is certainly not a reason to return to the approaches that have failed so many learners before.

📣And can we please stop treating education like a political football? Our children, teachers, and schools deserve stability, consistency, and decisions grounded in evidence, not politics.

Yesterday, we had the absolute privilege of travelling to Wellington to present three workshops at Sharing Best Practice alongside Sir James Chapman, Dr Olwyn Johnston and a whole range of other passionate educators.

We'll be sharing some highlights for sure, but a HUGE thank you to Olwyn, Barri, Robyn and the team at Tawa School for hosting and for your commitment to educating not only your own students and teachers, but opening up to the rest of Aotearoa too! Your generosity is second to none!
