NZ Cup Karate Championship 2026 (NZ Nationals #1) 🇳🇿🥋

We are proud to share that the first national championship of 2026 was organised by the national governing body, Karate New Zealand.

Representing NZLKA (AWK), a total of 47 of our students competed across the Premier, Intermediate, + Development categories.

This was an outstanding achievement for our team, as we finished at the top of the medal table, securing:

* 🥇 25 Gold
* 🥈 29 Silver
* 🥉 23 Bronze
Total: 77 medals

With 17 clubs participating from across New Zealand, this event marked a strong and highly competitive start to the national season.

We are incredibly proud of all our athletes for their dedication, performance, and spirit. 💪👏

🇦🇺 Australian Open Karate Championship 2026 – Sydney 🇦🇺

The NZLKA team proudly participated for the third time in the largest karate championship in the Oceania region, held from April 10–12 in Sydney, Australia. 🥋✨

A total of 16 students represented NZLKA New Zealand with great determination and spirit. The team gained valuable international experience, narrowly missing two gold medals by just one point, and also narrowly missing seven bronze medals, finishing in 5th place in several highly competitive matches during the medal rounds. 💪🔥

This prestigious event featured 993 entries, 73 clubs, and participants from seven nations, making it one of the most significant karate competitions in the Oceania region. 🌏🏆

This marked the third Australian Open competition for our NZLKA students, and they performed exceptionally well, achieving the following results:

🥉 Medalists:

* Oneli Soysa – U10 Kata Bronze 🥉
* Oneli Soysa – U10 Kumite Silver 🥈
* Kiara Wijeratne – U12 Kumite Bronze 🥉
* Gayeli Kulasinghe – U14 Kumite Silver 🥈
* Nirmith Athapattu – Cadets (14–15 Years) Kumite Bronze 🥉

* Leshan Athapattu – 5th Place, Junior Kumite (-68kg)
* Jayandu Aththanayake – 7th Place, Junior Kumite (-75kg)
* Aditha Maharamba – 7th Place, Junior Kumite (-61kg)
* Nirmith Athapattu – 5th Place, Cadets Open Kumite
* Thinidi Perera – 5th Place, U14 Kata & Kumite
* Sithuli Kulasinghe – 5th Place, U14 Kumite
* Akain Kulasinghe – 5th Place, U10 Kata
* Sithmi Mapamudiyanselage – 5th Place, Cadets (-47kg) Kumite
* Senupa Chandrasiri – 5th Place, Cadets (-57kg) Kumite & 7th Place in Kata

Congratulations to Sensei Kasun

We are pleased to congratulate Sensei Kasun, who represented New Zealand at the Australian Open and the Oceania Karate Federation (OKF) Referees Examination held from 10–12 April 2026 in Sydney, Australia.

He has successfully passed the OKF Kata and Kumite Judge B Examination, a commendable achievement that reflects his dedication and high standard of officiating.

Sensei Kasun is a New Zealand National A Grade Referee, and we at NZLKA are extremely proud of his accomplishment. We wish him every success in his future refereeing career.

He serves as a Senior Instructor under the guidance of Shihan Dhammika Ariyaratna, Founder and Chief Instructor of the New Zealand Karate Academy.

These champions competed throughout the 2025 Karate Auckland League tournaments, and the athletes who accumulated the highest number of points across the season were awarded the prestigious Grand Champion titles in their respective event categories.
