Level 2 Class Japanese Study group recap-Amida-kuji🎲♣️🃏♠️
After we reviewed Japanese demonstrative words, Kore(this), Sore(that) and Are(overthere), we played Amidakuji which is a Japanese ladder game, to match fruits with their Japanese names.
The children then used the Hiragana chart to find and read the words. We also explored the Katakana chart by looking at animal names and finding their Katakana spellings.
Children knew some animals in Japanese already! So proud!
This activity helped children become more confident using both Hiragana and Katakana charts imp.
Improve their reading skills, and strengthen their Japanese vocabulary. It also encouraged problem-solving and independent learning as they searched for the words themselves.

Level1 Japanese Study Group recap-Find it , Say it!
This week, we reviewed
Kore (this),
Sore (that), and
Are (that over there).
We also learned how to ask "Kore wa nan desu ka?" (What is this?) ❓
We then played a fun Japanese ladder game called Amidakuji 🎲. The children followed the lines to match fruits 🍎🍌🍓 with their Japanese names. After finding the correct word, they used the Hiragana chart to help read and pronounce it.
This was a great way to practise finding words and become more familiar with the Hiragana chart ✏️. I was especially proud that everyone pronounced the fruit names correctly by the end of the activity 👏. Well done, everyone! 🌟

📚Japanese Bilingual Story Time! at Mount Albert Library recap📚
We celebrated the library's new Japanese book collection with songs, stories, bubbles, and crafts.
🐛 We read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar/ Harapeko Aomushi" in both Japanese and English, and learned a little about Japanese numbers and counting words along the way. The kids helped count with our giant caterpillar as we followed the hungry caterpillar's adventure!
We sang Japanese songs, played with bubbles, and finished by making origami caterpillars together.
As the weather gets cooler, it was so nice to spend a warm Saturday morning surrounded by books and smiling faces. 💛
Don't forget that the library's Tamariki events run every Saturday with a different theme each week. Good for either rain or shine morning!
Thank you to everyone who joined us. 😊
Level 2 Japanese Study Group recap-Tsuyu (梅雨)Japan's rainy season.
We learned and reviewed vocabulary related to the season, including:
🌧️ Ame (Rain)
⚡ Kaminari (Thunder)
💧 Mizutamari (Puddle)
☀️ Hare (Sunny)
Students practised reading, writing, and pronunciation while discussing how these words relate to everyday life in Japan during Tsuyu.
We also played a Japanese vocabulary action game to reinforce our learning before finishing with a "Maru-Batsu (True or False) Quiz".
Students used their knowledge of Tsuyu and Japanese weather culture to answer a variety of questions. It was a fun and interactive way to strengthen both language skills and cultural understanding!

Level 1 Japanese Study Group recap-Rainy days ☔
We explored some new weather words:
🌧️ Ame (Rain)
⚡ Kaminari (Thunder)
💧 Mizutamari (Puddle)
☀️ Hare (Sunny)
After practising our pronunciation and writing, we played a fun "Copy Me" game!
Everyone had to do an action after hearing the word:
☔ Ame – open your umbrella
⚡ Kaminari – squat down
💧 Mizutamari – jump over the puddle
☀️ Hare – open your arms wide
To finish the lesson, we made "Teru Teru Bouzu", a traditional Japanese weather charm. In Japan, people hang it by the window and wish for sunny weather before a special day. It was craft time, so of course it was everyone's favourite part of the class! 😊

Level 2 class Japanese Study Group recap- “Urashima Tarou” 🐢🌊
We reviewed the story together, talked about the characters, what happened next, and even remembered the mysterious present Urashima Tarou received from Princess Otohime!
Then we had a fun discussion:
“What would YOU do if you were Urashima Tarou?”
Would you open the box or keep the promise? 👀
This story teaches us important lessons:
• Be kind to animals, family, and friends. Your kindness is always appreciated.
• Follow the rules and listen carefully… remember what happened when Urashima Tarou opened the box even though Princess Otohime told him not to? 😱
Through this lesson, we practised:
• Listening and storytelling skills
• Learning Japanese culture and traditional tales
• Speaking and sharing opinions in Japanese/English
• Remembering key vocabulary and characters
• Thinking about morals and life lessons in a fun way
Great job everyone! またね!

Level 1 Japanese Study Group recap-Story time🌊🐢
This week we explored the famous Japanese folktale “Urashima Tarou”
Please have a look the short version of this story at the bottom.
After we watched the story, we talked about the story together and shared what we would do if we were Urashima Tarou. The funniest part was everyone worrying about how they could breathe underwater 😂
With some extra time left, we finished class with a fun Hiragana letter game 🔤🎉
Great job everyone today! 🌸
🐢Urashima-tarou(The fisher man and The Dragon palace)🐢
Urashima Tarou was a fisherman who rescued a turtle from some naughty kids at the beach. The turtle took him to the beautiful Dragon Palace under the sea where he met Princess Otohime.
He had an amazing time there, and before he left, the princess gave him a mysterious box called “Tamate-bako” with one important rule… DO NOT OPEN IT!
When Urashima Tarou returned home, everything had changed 😢 He couldn’t recognise the village or the people anymore. Feeling sad and confused, he opened the box… and suddenly turned into an old man! 😱
