πŸŒ€ Storm preparedness in Aotearoa:

1. Stay Updated:

Follow MetService and Civil Defence alerts.
A watch = stay alert.
A warning = take action now.

2. Emergency Kit Essentials:

Water (4L per person, per day – aim for 3 days)
Tinned and dry food
First aid + prescriptions
Torches/headlamps + spare batteries
Charged power banks
Battery/solar radio
Some cash (ATMs/EFTPOS may go down)

3. Around the Home:

Peg down trampolines, put away outdoor furniture, tools, etc.
Clear gutters + storm drains
Close windows, curtains, and internal doors
Park vehicles away from trees or on higher ground (in flood-prone areas)
Ensure enough fuel for generators for 3 days requirments

4. On the Road:

Fill your tank
Avoid travel unless essential
Know your local evacuation routes
Carry a chainsaw or saw if possible while travelling if you live in the countryside

5. Stay Connected:

Charge your devices
Have a back-up communication plan
Let others know your plans
Have a whānau meet-up point
Check in on neighbours – especially elderly or isolated folks

During the storm:
Stay indoors. Keep away from windows. Keep listening for updates. Watch for signs of flooding if pertinent to your area

After the storm:
Wait for official advice before going out.
Be alert for downed power lines, slips, and surface flooding.

Kia tΕ«pato. Be prepared, not panicked.

Share this with your friends and whanau – preparedness saves lives.

Yes, New Zealand has native venomous snakes! 🐍

This post comes as I have seen a few show up on Facebook groups and people remain in disbelief.

The Yellow bellied sea snake (Photo 1) and the Banded sea krait (Photo 2) are the 2 we get.

They are considered Native as they arrive here naturally through ocean currents.

Their venom is 10 x more toxic than a rattlesnake. However, rarely do they bite or have we found many records of them biting, even when threatened.

Last video is one app I use to assist ID of flora and Fauna around the world. iNaturalist

Healing for broken bones, muscle injury, strains, sprains, tendons and ligaments. (Clinically Proven)

Comfrey roots and leaves contain allantoin, this is a substance that helps new skin cells grow.
Comfrey will reduce inflammation and work deeply for pulled muscles, ligaments, tendons breaks and strains.
πŸ—‘οΈ
Otherwise known as "Knit bone" and contains... Wait for it ..
🌿
Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, C and E, as well as boron, calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, selenium, sodium and zinc.Β
🌿
I make tea from the leaves, and eating it raw tastes delicious. (See warning below)

In this picture I suffer from tennis elbow so will mash a few leaves up into a poultice which is held in place by an old sock.
βš”οΈ
There was an early study done in mice, they fed the mice on a solely comfrey diet and resulted in liver damage. The same compounds that cause this are also found in honey, grain, milk, organs, eggs..
Common comfrey contains less of these alkaloids than Russian comfrey.
My ancestors drank tea thousands of years ago, up until about the early 2000s go figure..

Do your own research as always. Everything is poisonous in it's dose..

⚠️ Poisonous lookalikes include Foxglove which will paralyse you from the base of the spine up if consumed. ⚠️

April 6th is international . It is named after the frequency of the beacon signal, which has helped save the lives of countless people, all over the world. It's a good reminder to check your battery also on this day.

An emergency can happen anywhere, and whenever there's no phone coverage, a beacon is your best chance of signalling for help.

Activating the beacon sends a signal via satellite, telling the authorities you need urgent assistance and including your location so rescuers can get there quickly.

In New Zealand, 90 percent of land-based rescues that start with a beacon activation are completed in less than six hours. Without a beacon, 90 percent are completed in 17 hours.

A beacon can save your life. Hire or buy one for your next trip.

Category B bioterrorism agent and a schedule 1 chemical warfare agent.

According to Guinness World Records it is the world's most poisonous common plant due to the amount needed to kill a human.

Ricin plants commonly grow in NZ containing one of the most toxic substances ever discovered. (Ricin)

Ricinus (latin for Tick) as the seeds are a good indicator here. They look like ticks!

Castor oil comes from this plant which you should be familiar with.. it has been used for centuries as a slow burning oil for lamps.

Body ointments
Notably to assist in hair growth
It is a purgatory so this means a great laxative and intestinal cleanser.
Even used as an engine lubricant most notably WW1 plane engines.

Safe to say... Not safe to eat, but has innumerable uses like all poisonous plants.

Ricinus communis
