To inspire students to keep reading, we are featuring our Book of the Day during each day of Children’s Book Week, selected from Kumon’s Recommended Reading List.

Our featured book today is ‘The Giver’, a young adult dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. This book is a morally driven tale about a young boy called Jonas, who lives in a society free of crime and sadness, because there is some who holds all of the good and bad memories of the past within them. It is an interesting story that we recommend for older readers in late primary school or the early years of high school.

Kumon Australia and New Zealand strives to reduce our environmental impact in all our activities. We are pleased to have achieved a 36 percent reduction in paper usage from our head office, branch offices and Kumon Service Centre from 2020 to 2023. This was achieved with the help of our digitisation efforts, which originally arose as a response to COVID-19 but are still continuing.

"Did you know there are 20 levels in the Kumon English programme?

Our English worksheets begin with familiar words, phrases and short sentences. Students then learn to read and write by sounding short vowels, consonants and sound parts; tracing, copying and writing words; and reading aloud short passages. They progress to reading and writing simple and complex sentences, and comprehending paragraphs. The worksheets culminate in summarising and critical reading."

Kumon is individualised. As each student completes their work, we observe and collect data specific to that student’s learning situation

We do this by reviewing their completion time, accuracy, their ability to correct mistakes, and their motivation level

This information helps us identify which work is most suitable for the student to study next

By studying work tailored to their current ability, our students make progress at their own pace, rather than according to their age or school grade

This supports them to enjoy learning and to gain confidence and motivation
