Keep Learning Mid Canterbury

Keep Learning Mid Canterbury (formerly known as the 'Learning Exchange') is an initiative of Connecting Mid Canterbury Charitable Trust.

We organise workshops and talks, open to all, on a variety of subjects, which helps people to 'Keep Learning'. Get in touch if there's something you'd like to learn and we'll see if we can make it happen. Also send us a message if you would like to teach something in our Keep Learning Programme. We love hearing from locals!

Ready to Vote?

Head to the Ashburton Library tomorrow (Tuesday 25/8).
Presentations about voting & the elections at 12.30 and 5.30.

Free events - come along and learn about our electoral system, what's different this election, all about voting & enrolment.

In between the presentations, Electoral Commission staff will be there to help you update your details, check if you are enrolled or answer any questions you have.

Cabbage was part of the boil up at our 'A Taste of Aotearoa' class and it's the feature of our event this Saturday - The Mighty Cabbage!

People are bringing along cabbage dishes and recipes to share for lunch - so we can get inspired about new ways to cook this cheap and easy to grow vegetable.

If you're coming, make sure you register!

We love partnering with other local groups like the Ashburton Community Garden to run events.

These photos are from our very interesting DIY Water Harvesting and Irrigation event Kim from Eco Educate facilitated at the community garden earlier this year.

On Saturday August 22nd at 12pm we have partenered with the Community Garden to run ...

THE MIGHTY CABBAGE!

You get to decorate a photo frame with polymer clay and also create fridge magnets. Fun for your home or perhaps as a gift for someone else.

Thanks to funding from Creative Communities it's only $15 per person - and that includes all materials!

We're kicking off July with a fun Keep Learning event - a WEST COAST SWING DANCING workshop!

If you've seen West Coast Swing dancing reels on your facebook feeds and have been as wowed as I have, read on! (And if you haven't try youtube searching for West Coast Swing Jack & Jill- to see how amazing the *improvised* dances can be).

Thanks to Creative Communities grant funding we are bringing tutors from 'Code 03 Swing' in Christchurch, to Ashburton, to run a half day workshop for anyone interested in giving it a go.

🕑 Sunday July 5th from 2-6pm.

West Coast Swing is a smooth, modern partner dance but you don't need to bring a partner for the workshop - we'll rotate throughout the class so everyone gets a chance to dance and learn together. West Coast Swing is danced to everything from pop and blues to contemporary hits, making it one of the most versatile and social dance styles around.

27 people have already got their tickets but we can take a few more!

The Big Dress Up Quiz - post 3

Was so good to see lots of teams dress up for our quiz which added to the fun of the night. There were some really challenging quiz questions and some fun ones too... something for everyone we hope.

This will be an annual fundraiser for us, held on the Friday after King's Birthday each year, so if you missed it, or attended and want to repeat the good times - save the date for the next one... Friday June 11, 2027.

Wonder if we can beat our total raised this year of $2856?

The Big Dress-Up Quiz night - Post 1 - our winners!

🎉Congratulations to our winning teams and thanks to all those who came along on Friday for our inaugural quiz fundraiser.

🥇Quiz Winners on 94.5 points - It's Quizness Time. 1st prize hamper donated by ANZ Ashburton

🥈Runner up on 83.75 points - FMG Risky Quizness. 2nd prize hamper sponsored by Forsyth Barr

🥉Third place on 76.5 points (just one point ahead of team 'Last Minute') was the PB Crayons. 3rd prize chocolate & other goodies sponsored by Ashburton New World

🤩 Best dressed team... the Mexicans aka Norfolk-n-clue. Their prize (6 passes for a VR Escape Room at Virtual and Retro) was donated by Accountantz Ltd.

😮 Our surprise prize this year went to the Second to last placed team... 'Bee Busy'. Talleys / Season's Best sponsored this prize- a box full of frozen veges for each team member! They left quickly - probably to ensure their frozen veg got home and into the freezer- so we didn't get a photo of them with their prize boxes.

Well done to all and big thanks to our Prize sponsors!
