This short part of the play, performed by class 4 students, highlights a common question asked by many families in a Waldorf setting. The story begins with a grandmother visiting the kindergarten classroom to pick up her 5-year-old grandchild. Concerned, she asks the teacher why her grandchild hasn’t started reading and writing yet. The parent also expresses similar curiosity, comparing it with other schools where children begin formal academics at an earlier age.
The teacher gently explains the philosophy of Waldorf education—emphasizing that early childhood is not meant for academic pressure but for nurturing imagination, creativity, and emotional development. Through activities like storytelling, painting, singing, nature walks, and baking, children develop essential foundational skills such as coordination, language, focus, and social understanding.
The teacher reassures the family that reading and writing will be introduced when the child is developmentally ready—usually around age six—ensuring that learning is a joyful and natural process. The play concludes with the family understanding and appreciating the deeper value of the kindergarten experience at Tashi Waldorf School, where education begins with the heart and hands before moving to the head.
