Work done

Work is done by a force on a particle when the body displaces in the direction of applied force.

When the direction of the force and that of displacement are same, the work done by the force on the particle is equal to product of the force and displacement.

When the direction of displacement and that of force are different, work done by the force on the body is product of displacement and component of force in the direction of the displacement.

When work is done, energy transforms from one form to another. For example, when a particle falls due to gravity, work is done by the gravitational force on the particle. Consequently, potential energy is transformed to kinetic energy.

Question to the reader:

A watchman stands at the entrance for 8 hours. Does gravitational force do work on the man? Why the watchman gets tired?

What determines the path?

In projectile motion, you are taught that an object moving under action of gravity alone follows parabolic path.

In planetory motion, a planet moving under the action of gravity alone follows elliptical path.

Why trajectory change? Share your opinion.

Inertial mass

Inertial mass is quantity in an object that resist acceleration. A ball is accelerated at 9.8 m/s^2 near the surface of the earth. According to Newton's third law the ball exerts equal force on the earth. Why the earth not accelerated at the same rate? It is because of Inertial mass of the earth.

The Inertial mass of the earth is so large that the acceleration produced due to attraction of the ball is negligible.

Newton's first law of motion

In absence of net external force, velocity of an object must be constant (including zero). The first law is also known as law of inertia.

Conservation of momentum

Total momentum of an isolated system is always constant. This is called Conservation of momentum.

If an isolated system contains more than one particle, then total momentum before collision is equal to total momentum after collision of the particles.
