Why Populism Never Wins

Nepal is at a political crossroads.
As the 2026 elections get closer, a strong wave of populist, anti-establishment sentiment is reshaping the country’s politics. Many people feel let down by traditional parties like the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist).
Into this space steps a new force, the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP), along with youth-backed leaders promising fast and dramatic change. They talk about reform. They present themselves as outsiders. They promise to fix the system.
But history tells a familiar story. From the United States to India to Brazil, populist movements often rise because people are genuinely frustrated, but they struggle once they are in power. Big promises often run into political realities.
So what makes Nepal different?
Can populism really deliver deep reform, or does it eventually fall short?
Hear Hajurba- Eknath Nyaupane as he breaks down the case and explore how populism is reshaping Nepal’s political future.
