Entry 23: Faces of Volunteerism Photo Contest

“As soon as my SLC examinations were over and I had 3 months gap before my high school, I took this time to go to my village (Bangsing-3, Syangja) to volunteer in a school (Jana Priya Secondary School). A school established by my grandfather. A school where my father studied. A school, which is the sole reason behind all the privileges I enjoy today.
I volunteered in the school for two months. Basically I took classes for the secondary level and especially for the tenth grade who were to appear the SLC examinations the following year. Upon presenting slides to make students understand the importance of digital world, the students were amazed to see the advances that were already happening in the world at present. To see their amazed expression gave me mixed emotions of both satisfaction and distress. Along with this I organized various competitions among the students such as talent show competition, quiz competition, art competition, debate competition and many more and provided small prizes to the students that I had carried all the way to Bangsing-3,Syangja. These prizes included nothing more than few color pencils, geometry boxes and pens but the happiness these brought to them is ineffable. Throughout the period I worked in nurturing the leadership capabilities of the students by nominating the students through healthy election and assigning them various works. I also helped in improving the morning assembly conduction of the school and the English environment in the school. Overall I tried to establish good schooling culture. Basically in a limited frame of time I tried to give back what I had got in my school life.
I really felt good to see those precious smiles on the children’s faces as they got to perform new tasks, read about something they have never listened about, to receive prizes. The children of Jana Priya were no less creative than the children I had seen in my school but they lacked a good platform to showcase their talents. Reminiscing the amount of self-satisfaction it has provided me, this volunteering experience has proved out to be a watershed in my life. And now that the bug of travelling and volunteering has bit me I can’t imagine my life further where I would not be travelling further more rural areas and helping people in need.”- Bipul Paudel
