Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development is a comprehensive theory about the nature and development of human intelligence that describes how children learn from birth through adolescence. They actively construct their own understanding of the world through experience. Cognitive development happens in stages, and each stage reflects a different way of thinking.

1. Sensorimotor Stage (Birth to 2 years)
Learning happens through senses and actions (touching, seeing, grasping).
Infants explore the world physically.
Key achievement:
- Object permanence
- Understanding that objects still exist even when not seen.

2. Pre-operational Stage (2-7 years)
Development of language and imagination.
Thinking is egocentric (child struggles to see others' perspectives).
Lacks logical reasoning.
Key features:
- Symbolic play (using objects to represent something else)
- Animism (believing objects have feelings)

3. Concrete Operational Stage (7-11 years)
Thinking becomes more logical and organized, but only about concrete objects.
Key abilities:
- Conservation (understanding quantity remains the same despite changes in shape)
- Classification (grouping objects)
- Reversibility (understanding actions can be undone)

4. Formal Operational Stage (11+ years)
Development of abstract and logical thinking.
- Ability to think about:
- Hypothetical situations
- Future possibilities
- Moral reasoning

: Mental framework for understanding the world.
: Fitting new information into existing schemas.
: Changing schemas to fit new information.
: Balancing assimilation and accommodation to learn.
