Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow Pose aka Wheel Pose )

The final backbending posture found at the end of the Primary Series is obviously a very deep spinal extension. It may look intimidating🦁, but there are many ways to access Urdvha Dhanurasana with a combination of modifications, guidance and practice💪

Although considered a 'backbend', this is as much an OPENING 🐣 of the anterior(front) plane as a bending of the posterior(back) plane. When viewed in this way, the practitioner can focus more on opening the hips, chest and shoulders outwards, like an archer 🏹 drawing back his bow 🎯

The automatic response going into this pose is to breath rapidly due to the initial intense feeling created🤯 After careful practice with a teacher however, we can learn to take control by slowing and lengthening the breath. From that calming perspective👀, the student can actively explore🧭 the sensations arising through the stimlation of the sympathetic nervous system🧠 in a disassociative way.

Ultimately this teaches us how to remain unaffected😎 in the face of (perceived) danger. These are literally tools 🔧 we can develop in a controlled way that help mitigate levels of stress, anxiety and depression 🔥

Family 👪 ❤

Up until a couple of days ago I was living with these incredible people in a truly unique place. Leaving was quite painful to be honest. Yet I'm endlessly grateful to have spent the past year in such esteemed company. I learned many things from everyone and a lot of positive experiences happened to me as well as some painful growth. Its all quite simple really and perhaps a bit of a cliche at this point.

When all is said and done though, Yoga is never just what we see on the mat. The sweaty shapes and postures we sometimes fetishise over are just a means to an end. These asanas we see can be more accuartely described as vehicles that can facilitate a feeling within ourselves. That feeling is the same in every person, and that feeling is what we try to cultivate during the unglamorous human interactions we are forced to engage in every day - that feeling of Connection.

The connections we have to ourselves, to one another and the support we can offer is what real Yoga is. The Yoga practice helps us to see clearly and engage in that offering of support more frequently. As far as I can tell, there is no better feeling in this crazy life than that. Thank you for showing me.

The Mysore Room (a concept.)

A place of intensity, sweat and hard work.

A place of love, acceptance and release.

A place to rise up and a place to ground down.

A place for you to awaken your own experience and a place to support others in theirs.

A place to give space for what is.

Seeking and arriving, together in the Mysore Room.

Bharadvājāsana - Pose of Sage Bharadvāja.

One of the rotation postures from intermediate series (Nādī Śhodana).
After several intense back bending postures, this twist has a grounding effect which calms down the nervous system.

Many Yogasānas are named after mythical figures. According to indomythology, Sage Bjaradvāja was a revered Vedic scholar. He features as an offshoot character in the great story, 'The Mahabarata' as the father of the Brahmin born 'Droņa' whom turned into a great warrior.

Drona whos name hilariously means 'bucket', was born under mystical circumstances. Where the seed of Sage Bjaradvāja was accidentally ej******ed, falling into a bucket of soil and thus Drona was born.

Despite his name, he went on to become a great master in the arts of war. He was selected by the great Bhiśma to train the Sons of Pandu and the hundred Sons of Dhrtarāştra in combat.

He later famously fought along side the Kauravas against the Pandavas in the great battle for Kuruksthera in 'The Bhagavad-Gita'.

So I guess even if your birthname is 'Bucket' you can still play an important role in life 🤣

''The ongoing restrictions and icy temperatures may feel like a never-ending endurance test at the moment! Cultivating a yogic mindset can make all the difference in how you navigate through these wild times...

Modern science is continually revealing the innermost teachings of yoga as a means to help us through the inevitable ebb and flow of life. Our ultimate happiness is not dependant on outer circumstances, but on our inner resilience. Developing these invaluable mental traits doesn't just happen though!

Ashtanga is often misunderstood as a purely physical practice focusing on a linear progression. The true essence of Ashtanga is not about being a contortionist, but about being able to move the stagnated energy within our bodies and minds. I've seen massive break throughs for practitioners once they address not just their physical bodies, but also mastering their prana/breath to cultivate true inner resilience and freedom.''

Ustrāsana ~ Camel Pose 🐫

The 1st of 3 deep back bending poses of the Intermediate Series of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system 🧬 This pose opens the anterior plane of the body. It requires the hip flexors, abdomen, chest, and shoulder joints to be stretched and strengthened 💪

On an esoteric level, it also is said to open the mūlādāra (root of existence) and svadisthana (self establishment) cakras (energy wheels). The cakras of the subtle body are conceptually rooted in ancient Samkyian and Vedantic anatomical structures. Often they are referred to by contemporary psychologists and mythologists, including Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell. 🙏

Stay tuned for the next 2 back bending asanas.

Marichyasana C 🏞

(Posture of the Rishi Marichi.)

This posture is generally one of the more accessible Marichyasana poses. Binding the hands together usually brings most of the challenge and is often related to restrictions in the middle of the back and also the shoulder joints.

However after some practice, one can twist the thoracic spine deeply which feels great. The lumber spine presses down to offer stability and ensuring more twisting in the thoracic cavity of the spine. The intercostal muscles are stretched. As well, the hip muscles become more open to allow for deeper back bending postures at the end of practice.

It also looks decent on a sup board in the middle of Summer 😉😂
