Today, Tuesday, 6 May, SKOK organizes an open seminar on «Trump, anti-gender politics and academic freedom» in Bergen Global 14:15 – 16:00
Under the current Trump administration, federal agencies have been instructed to remove terms like 'gender', 'sexuality' and 'diversity' from official documents and websites as part of a comprehensive anti-gender strategy. This censorship has sparked debates about the erosion of academic freedom and the broader implications for research and education. Panelists are Haley McEwen (University of Gothenburg) and Jon Braddy (Florida Gulf Coast University) and Kari Jegerstedt (Senter for kvinne- og kjønnsforskning SKOK UiB). On Monday, 12 May, there is a screening of “Are You Proud?” which charts the LGBTQI+ movement's journey toward equality, celebrating the community's achievements while highlighting ongoing struggles.
The viewing is followed by a panel discussion with Tone Hellesund from the Department of History (UIB) and Francesca Feo and Siri Gloppen from the Department of Government (UiB). This will reflect on the present and future of LGBTQI+ activism and everyday experiences in a time of growing gender backlash and attacks on q***r rights globally.
Doors at the Akademiske Kvarter, Tivoli opens at 18:00. The film starts: 18:30 and both the movie and panel talk are in English.
This event is part of the "Film & politikk" series by DEMOS and the Department of Government/Institutt for politikk og forvaltning ved UiB and marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (May 17) .
