Darklax DARKLAX is a research project at the University of Bergen.

It investigates the rise and potential decline of the salmon farming industry in Chile and its connections to Norway, exploring broader questions about sustainability and environmental change.

๐ŸŒŠ Realizado en colaboraciรณn con el trabajo de campo de Esteban Avigliano, de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, el documental sigue el recorrido y la vida de โ€œSโ€, el salmรณn protagonista, y su encuentro con el pescador Emiliano Almada en el rรญo Paranรก, Argentina.

๐ŸŸ Lejos de ser presentado como un producto, el salmรณn aparece aquรญ como un ser con identidad propia, desplazado de su entorno natural y situado en un ecosistema ajeno. Desde allรญ, se convierte en protagonista de su propia historia, migraciรณn y memoria.

Salmon farming is often celebrated for generating growth and opportunity under the promise of sustainability. It took off in the early 1970s as a response to overfishing and depleted marine life, but it quickly created problems bigger than those it aimed to solve. While promises of sustainability highlighted economic growth, the costs and benefits have been unevenly distributed.

In Chile, local communities and ecosystems frequently bear the risks of an industry driven by global demand. And itโ€™s not only people or the environment at stake: the salmon themselves, introduced and farmed far from their native habitats, have become central to the transformations and experiments shaping southern waters. ๐“๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐จ๐ง๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐š ๐ฅ๐จ๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ. ๐ˆ๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐š ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐จ๐ง๐ž, in which Norway has played a key role in shaping the expansion of salmon farming and the introduction of non-native species.
