Back to the Body: A Journey from Survival to Connection
In the world of trauma recovery, there is a growing awareness that healing does not happen solely in the mind. For people who have experienced complex trauma, the body can become strange and even hostile territory. This case illustrates how somatic work - therapy that focuses on the connection between body and mind - can be an essential link in the recovery process.
Lessons from Practice
Mental processing alone is not enough. This client had already had years of therapy, particularly cognitive and emotion-focused. She had developed much insight. But the foundation - the connection with the body - was still missing.
The body holds the history. The nervous system disorder is not 'merely' psychosomatic in the sense of imaginary. It is a real manifestation of years of stress. The body remains in a pattern that once provided protection.
Small steps are valuable. A bolster under the feet, conscious breathing, making a sound - these seem like simple interventions. But for someone who is disconnected from the body, they are important breakthroughs.
Functioning is not the same as healing. The client functions in many areas. She studies, lives independently, has friends. But inside her system storms still rage. True healing requires more - it requires feeling, connecting, and being.
Trust and Connection
For someone who has learned to do everything independently and trust no one, building trust is a major step. 'I think that's also an aspect of being traumatized,' is explained. 'That you've done everything independently. What you can work on is actually trusting another person.'
This trust has a direct impact on the physical work. When you feel more trusted, your body shows more. You dare to show fear, release tension, experience emotions. To heal from trauma in which you had no control, you must learn to let go of control.
