ASTUS has an Urban Gardening Collective. We currently have a collaboration with Lola's Bikes and Coffee. Are you interested to join? Hello there, we are hosting an end of the year ASTUS event for all Urban Studies students. We kindly ask you to bring cans of preferred drinks to play a flunky / beer ball tournament. The plan is to make teams of 4 people at the location itself. We are going to meet at 15.00 at a location at Zuiderstrand, the exact location will be shared in the group chats on the day itself. Do not forget to bring WATER, food or snacks, a blanket or towel, a hat or sunglasses, sunscreen and the drinks! Hope to see you there, to usher in the summer holiday with us! History, Culture, and Identity Erasure – the topic of our next Critical Urbanists meeting.

We will delve into practices that have rendered certain groups, cultures, and narratives practically invisible, powerless, and in some instances erased from discourse. How do we re-empower minority groups that have been shoved away? How can we deglorify symbols of a dark history without unintentionally disregarding its existence?

To have a fun mix-up from our usual structure, we will first take the time to collectively watch a video related to the topic during the meeting. Afterward, we start the discussion. We have compiled a list of various materials of which you are free to choose any that you find interesting to prepare for the meeting. You can find them via the link in bio on our instagram!

Or find your own interesting materials for the topic! Hopefully, this allows us to all bring a different background to the table to have a fun conversation.

We are very excited to announce our last guest lecture of the current academic year.

On the 6th of May, from 15:00-17:00 in Wijnhaven room 3.48, Dr. Valdivia Rivera will give us a guest lecture titled “Urban Latin America: the multiple faces of Inequality.” Dr. Valdivia Rivera is a lecturer of Latin-America Studies at Leiden University. She is specialised in state-social movements and democratisation processes, with a main focus on Bolivia.

Dr. Valdivia Rivera was born in Bolivia and came to live in the Netherlands in 1997. She obtained a BA in Cultural Anthropology and completed the two-year Research Master Programme on Latin American and Amerindian Studies at Leiden University. In 2009, she was awarded a Mosaic grant by the NWO (the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research) to carry out a four year doctoral research. After finishing her PhD she has written her own book about Political Networks and Social Movements in Bolivia.
