The new portal is your one-stop location for accessing and managing your personal university information. As the portal is designed to work on all devices, you will be able to access the information you need whenever you need it. Herewith Maastricht University aims to considerably improve its information supply.

Teaching timetables automatically in your digital agenda - For students and teachers it is vital to have their timetables on time. It is possible to link My Timetable and Microsoft Exchange, or any other digital agenda, so teaching schedules can automatically be imported into your own digital calendar. Updates/changes will automatically appear in your agenda. To activate the link a few actions have to be taken. On the UM website there is a short manual and a reference to where you can find more help.

A. First sit: 1 – 17 June 2016


Submit your thesis via ELEUM/Safe Assignment on 17 June 16:00 hrs. Central European Time (CET), the latest.

B. Publication result of first sit: 13 July 2016 the latest

Passed your thesis and met all other requirements of the Bachelor’s exam?

Your graduation date is 30 June 2016.
The graduation ceremony will take place on.

ES: 29 October 2016, 13:00 hrs.
CW: 4 November 2016, 10:30 hrs.
AC: 4 November 2016, 13:00 hrs.


If you do not de-register, your registration automatically ends on 31 August 2016.
De-registration is not necessary however possible (to be requested via Studielink).

Despite of being de-registered tuition fees for the months July and August will not be refunded.
If applicable: don’t forget to discontinue your study financing and student travel card.

You can take the resit on 19 August 2016.
The resit will be booked for you automatically.

Submit your thesis via ELEUM/Safe Assignment on 19 August 16:00 hrs. CET the latest.
You are eligible for the 3rd sit on 18 November 2016 if you meet all requirements (check at D. “Failed?”).
To ensure your eligibility for the 3rd sit on 18 November 106 you should submit and complete your re-registration for 2016/2017 before 15 August 2016.
Should you pass your 31 August 2016 sit and – as a result – graduate on that date, the Student Services Centre will undo your re-registration in September and paid tuitions fees will be refunded.

D. Publication result of resit: 14 September 2016 the latest

Passed your thesis and met all other requirements of the Bachelor’s exam?

Your graduation date is 31 August 2016.
Check at B. for further information on the graduation ceremony.
Your registration automatically ends on 31 August 2016.
In case you re-registered for 2016/2017 your re-registration will be undone by the Student Services Centre and paid tuitions fees will be refunded.


Failed?

You are eligible for the 3rd sit on 18 November 2016 if you meet the following requirements:


A valid re-registration per 1 September 2016.
The thesis is the only study unit you lack.
You received a failing grade for the June 2016 chance as well: no No Grade!!!


If you meet all conditions you will be notified and the 3rd resit (2015/2016) will be booked for you automatically.

No Grade?

You are not eligible for the 3rd sit on 18 November 2016 because you do not meet the requirement of no No Grade for the thesis.
You can resubmit in June 2017 the earliest (deadline 23 June 2017).
For this you need a valid re-registration:

Bachelor ES: starting 1 December 2016, to be arranged before 15 November 2016;
Bachelor AC/CW: starting 1 February 2017, to be arranged before 15 January 2017.


In case you already have a valid re-registration per 1 September 2016 you can contact the Front Office to get the start date of your re-registration adjusted.



E. Conditional 3rd sit: 1 – 18 November 2016: this is the last time this 3rd sit is offered to Bachelor students!

If you are a candidate for this 3rd sit you will be notified by the Office of Student Affairs via your UM e-mail account; only if you receive this notification you can submit for this 3rd sit.
Book for the thesis 2016/2017 before the deadline of 13 November 2016 (just to prevent all kind of problems later on, in the unlikely situation you would fail this 3rd sit as well).
Send in a de-registration request via Studielink before 15 November 2016. Choose reason: Graduation, end date of re-registration: 30 November 2016.

If applicable: don’t forget to discontinue your study financing and student travel card.

You can resubmit in June 2017.
Your re-registration stays valid; your de-registration request will not be processed because you did not graduate yet.

Thesis writing workshops by FASoS academic writing advisor John Harbord - In May, FASoS academic writing advisor, John Harbord, will be offering three workshops on thesis writing. These workshops are principally directed at third year BA students, but MA students who would like to attend are free to do so. The workshops take place on Monday 9, Monday 12 and Thursday 19 May from 09.00-10.30 at the Attic of Grote Gracht 80-82. Please register beforehand with John Harbord if you would like to attend.



There are three workshops in total, you may attend any or all of these workshops.

Workshop 1: Writing your introduction
Monday 9 May, 9.00, in GG80-82 3.002 - Attic

Using a model based on research, and samples from published articles, you will draft the introduction to your thesis and receive peer feedback on your writing.

Workshop 2: Relating to the literature
Thursday 12 May, 9.00, in GG80-82 Attic

Looking at examples from published work we will explore the different roles of others’ work in the thesis. You will rationalise the debate and the role of literature in your own thesis and receive feedback.

Workshop 3: Structuring the thesis
Thursday 19 May, 9.00, in GG80-82 Attic

We will reflect on the principles of structuring academic work and guiding the reader through your thesis using appropriate lexical indicators, and put these into practice.

Not more than 35 people can be accommodated in the Attic. For this reason only, registration beforehand with John Harbord is necessary. If you have not registered, you may still come at 9.00, but in the (very unlikely) event that the maximum capacity is exceeded, you may not be able to stay.

Online course descriptions 2016-2017 available from 18 May onwards - Every year the new course descriptions are published on 1 May. This year, however, the publication of the new course descriptions will coincide with the launch of the new UM website. This takes place on Wednesday 18 May. The warnings consist of a letter with an advice (green, orange, or red) and a transcript of results obtained so far. The documents are sent by postal mail to the residential (or living) address; in case your residential or living address is not listed in our database, we will use the standard address. Please check your mail carefully in the next few days; in case you do not receive the warning letter within two weeks you can ask for a copy of this letter via FASoS Study Information.

To all 1st year students: Binding Study Advice - As announced in the BSA warning advice dated March 2015, the Faculty sends its first decisions regarding the Binding Study Advice to the majority of first-year students at the end of May/beginning of June 2015. Further information on the first decisions is available on MyUM – FASoS study information, including files with ID numbers. This information will enable you to check whether you can expect a decision now or in August.

The letters containing positive and imminent negative BSA are sent to your residential address as listed in MyUM; in case the residential (or living) address was not filled out we used the standard address.

The results of period 1, 2 and 3, including respective resits, and the results of period 4 are registered in MyUM. A substantial amount of students appear to already meet the criterion of 42 ects in their first-year programme. Letters with a positive Binding Study Advice were sent to these students on Friday 29 May.

In the remaining few weeks of the current academic year, the number of credits that still can be obtained is limited: for ES another 30.5 ECTS, for CW and AC 27 ECTS (see explanation below).
Students for whom it is now already clear that they can no longer meet the BSA criterion of 42 ECTS were sent a letter informing them of an imminent negative Binding Study Advice. These letters were sent on 27 May.
If you receive a letter containing a negative Binding Study Advice and you think that there are personal circumstances that should be taken into account in the final decision, you may request an appointment for a hearing with the Board of Examiners by email from 1 to 5 June 2015 (deadline: 5 June at noon 12:00 PM) at [email protected] -> Please ignore the out-of-office notification, as an exception will be made for requests for a BSA hearing), by fax (043-3884917) or submit a written request at the Faculty’s Front Office. The hearings will take place on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 June.

Students for whom it has been not possible yet to determine a BSA (for ES students: from 11.5 to 42 ECTS, for AC-CW students: from 15 to 42 ECTS) will receive their BSA decisions by August 2015. We hope that they will succeed in obtaining sufficient credits in the remaining exams in order to meet the BSA criterion.

On FASoS study information (follow: Exams and Study Results > Binding Study Advice) you will find the lists of students with a positive BSA (184 students), NBSA candidates (49 students) and the remaining group of 218 students who can expect to receive their BSA decision in August 2015.

Explanation of the calculation for the Bachelor ES:
The resits of the economics courses of period 4, the resit of the Faultlines course of period 3/4 and the results for period 5 are not known yet: this means that ES students may still obtain 30.5 ECTS. We therefore conclude that students who passed less than 11.5 ECTS will no longer be able to meet the 42 ECTS criterion before the end of the current academic year.

Explanation of the calculation for the Bachelor AC and CW:
The results of period 5, the resits of period 4 and of the Portfolio-Coaching are not known yet: this means that AC-CW students can still obtain 27 ECTS. We therefore conclude that students who passed less than 15 ECTS will no longer be able to meet the 42 ECTS criterion before the end of the current academic year.

Updated Code of Conduct FASoS - The latest version of the FASoS Code of Conduct has been set up in close cooperation between student representatives and staff. All students are expected to familiarise themselves with this text. All new first year FASoS students will find this Code of Conduct in the Curriculum Catalogue which they will receive during the introduction week at the end of August. Current students can find the Code of Conduct online via FASoS Study Information.
