What is the PROTECT Survey?

This online survey is running across Europe and seeks to uncover who may benefit from the innovation that is long acting injectable PrEP. The European Commission (EC) has authorised Apretude (cabotegravir long-acting [LA] injectable and tablets) for HIV prevention. The availability of cabotegravir LA for PrEP will differ from country to country across the EU. It is important for health services and policy makers to understand who may be interested in taking long acting injectable PrEP so that resources can be most effectively allocated. The PROTECT survey is for people from the following groups:

Men who have s*x with men
Trans* people
Heteros*xual people
People living with HIV

Our multidisciplinary team comes from around the world and works from Maastricht, a cross-roads between the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. We have experience with creating and analysing similar large online surveys such as EMIS (The European Men who have s*x with Men Internet Survey) and have expertise in HIV prevention and Le***an, Gay, Bis*xual, Transgender, Inters*x, Q***r (LGBTIQ) health.

Haoyi Wang is a PhD student also working on this research study and has expertise in geospatial analysis and modelling.

Johann Kolstee is the managing researcher on this study. He has experience working on survey’s related to HIV prevention and gay men’s health in Australia and Canada.
