Oh wow, the heat here in the Netherlands these past few days has been something else! Yesterday, July 1st, it actually hit 35°C — which is crazy because usually July just gets us ready for summer, but this year July came with the full-on heat. The sun here feels so different from back home in Africa. It’s not super humid, but it feels like your skin is slowly roasting. You try to cool down but the heat just sticks with you.

Today, some rain finally came and brought a bit of relief — that fresh rain smell I really missed. But as soon as the rain stopped, the warmth came back again. The funny thing is, the ground barely looks like it even rained, only the drains are showing that it did. Nature really does what it wants, huh?

For a place that’s usually cool and rainy, this sudden heatwave is wild. Sending good vibes to anyone else trying to survive this unexpected summer. Who else loves the sun but is secretly hoping for a breeze? Because I’m right there too! 🙋‍♀️

It’s been a little while since I posted — last week was a full one. But here’s a soft comeback 😊

This year, our whole family joined in — our daughter walked 5km (with joy, determination, and surprisingly… no drama! 😄), and our son did a full 10km like a focused champ 💪🏾. We, the parents, also walked — and survived it too!

One thing we really love about this tradition is the message behind it: healthy living, movement, and community spirit. We tried not to give candies (because, yes, health!) but somehow our daughter still found her way to collect some from her sweet little friends. 😂🍬 Still, we’re proud of how well she walked — this same girl who once acted like 500 meters was Mount Everest!

At the end, there was this beautiful sight: lines of families, grandparents, and friends with flowers, hugs, and small gifts for the kids. Each child got a medal — not just for walking, but for showing up, step by step.

A truly Dutch tradition we’ve come to appreciate so much. We’re already looking forward to next year — though next time I’m asking for a foot massage at the finish line! 😂

Today marks Dag 2 of the Avondvierdaagse — a yearly tradition in the Netherlands that began in 1940. For four evenings, kinderen and ouders walk together through their gemeente (municipality), promoting gezondheid (health), plezier (fun), and a strong sense of gemeenschap (community).

Last year, our son walked with his voetbalclub and was joined by dad. This year, we decided to do it as a family — our son with his team, our daughter with her basisschool, and I walked along with our baby. It’s been a heartwarming experience and a beautiful way to connect as a family.

One of the things we truly admire about the Netherlands is how they naturally include sport en beweging (sport and physical activity) into everyday life. Such a great example for both children and adults alike!

We look forward to the remaining days and the celebration on the final evening! 🎉👟

This is not your average cheese. This is Gouda (pronounced “How-da” 😉)
And yes, they sell it everywhere. Even your dreams might start smelling like cheese soon. 😂
