Many students do not struggle with maths because they are weak at it. They struggle because they were trained to remember steps, not to think through problems.
This becomes very clear in lower secondary years and exam classes, when questions stop looking familiar and students are expected to apply ideas, not repeat them.
Strong maths thinking looks different from memorisation.
A strong maths thinker can explain what a question is asking before trying to solve it. They can choose a method instead of guessing one.
They notice when an answer does not make sense and go back to check it. These skills matter far more in exams than how many formulas a student can recall.
This is why some students say, “I understood it in class,” but then lose marks in tests. They recognised the topic, but they were not trained to think with it. When questions change slightly, memorised methods fall apart.
For students between 11 and 16, this gap becomes costly. Maths moves faster. Topics connect to each other. Exams reward reasoning, structure, and accuracy under pressure. At this stage, thinking matters more than speed.
