The FuseNet Association is the European Fusion Education Network. Keep up-to-date with the latest fusion related news, upcoming events & open PhD positions

The Fusenet Association is an independent legal entity that was founded in December 2010 to provide a platform for the coordination of European fusion education activities, the initiation, development and implementation of new EU-wide actions, and for the exchange and dissemination of fusion education information. The association is open to all European organizations that are active in the field of fusion education and research.

The European Teacher Day will take place in 3 weeks on 2 October 2026!

The goal of the European Fusion Teacher Day is to introduce nuclear fusion to secondary school teachers throughout Europe, to discuss teaching nuclear fusion to secondary school students and to create enthusiasm for the field of fusion at the secondary education level. This event will be fully online.

The event will feature Domestic Sessions with lectures by local fusion experts on current fusion research in your area. Additionally, there will be a European Session in which new (free) educational materials will be presented, and keynote speakers will give an inside look into selected fusion facilities engaged in the international effort towards the achievement of fusion power. The whole event will be remote.

UNED - Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia will be offering a new Master's Degree in Computational Neutronics (MUNC). This one-year program (60 ECTS) is the first master's degree worldwide focused exclusively on computational neutronics. It is an applied, industry-oriented, program designed to train students and professionals to tackle real-world nuclear analysis challenges. A technical background in Physics, Nuclear Engineering or related engineering fields is recommended, and some familiarity with computational tools will be helpful. However, the programme is designed to help students progressively build the practical skills needed for computational work in neutronics.

The programme, taught entirely in English, is of hybrid format with 7 courses delivered 100% online and in-person exams that can be taken at any of UNED's 80 global centers. The final Master's Thesis (18 ECTS) is carried out in collaboration with a "market agent" (an industry or research host) to solve real technical problems. It is also possible to do on-site internships at major organizations like ITER, Fusion for Energy (F4E), IFMIF-DONES, Proxima Fusion, CIEMAT and more. However, while on-site internships are encouraged (with mobility funding available), the thesis can also be completed fully online.

Applications for the 2027 EUROfusion engineering grants are open!

These 2-year grants are aimed at young engineers with a Master and/or PhD degree working in or entering the EUROfusion programme. In total, around 14 grants are expected to be awarded. The grants support career development in key competency areas for fusion and are awarded based on the excellence of the candidates. The eligibility rules allow applicants who completed their MSc degree between 1 June 2020 and 15 September 2026, and candidates may complete their PhD during the grant period.

Applications must be submitted by General Assembly members by 17 July 2026, 23:59 CEST. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place online between 12 and 30 October 2026.

Congratulations to the winners of the FuseNet Master Thesis Prize 2025! Thank you to everyone who has submitted a master thesis this year. According to the jury (consisting of members from the academic board), the winners this year are:

- Alice Buzzoni (Istituto per la Scienza e la Tecnologia dei Plasmi, CNR / Politecnico di Milano): Production and analysis of metallic coatings on ceramic substrates for the Electron Cyclotron Heating launching mirror of DTT.

- David Bermúdez Parra (SCK CEN / Technical University of Madrid): Mechanical Properties of Structural Metallic Alloys for Nuclear Applications Deduced by Three-Point Bend Testing.

- Daniela Kropáčková (Czech Technical University in Prague): Control-Oriented Modelling for Density Control.

- David Becker (DIFFER / Eindhoven University of Technology): Investigating the use of Solid-State Radio Frequency Sources for Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating in Nuclear Fusion.

- Víctor Fernández Pacheco Albandea (CIEMAT / Charles III University of Madrid): Piecewise omnigenous stellarator configurations optimized with respect to reactor-relevant physics criteria.

From 24 August to 4 September, IPP CAS in Prague, Czechia, will be hosting its 22nd summer training course: SUMTRAIC 2026. The program includes a day of informative lectures, an English presentation for a broad audience and social events such as a tour of Prague, a welcome party and a visit of GOLEM!

During the two-week event, participants will be paired with one or two other participants. Each group will be assigned a fusion-oriented topic linked to actual research conducted at the IPP Prague. Topics may vary from simulations of COMPASS tokamak experiments to working with actual experimental data or experimental topics on the GOLEM tokamak.

All students from bachelor to PhD levels are welcome to apply by 14 June, and must provide a CV, a recommendation letter, and a cover letter. Applicants can expect an answer before the end of June. This year, the fee for participation is set to 850 EUR including accommodation for two weeks with breakfast (not covering travel and daily expenditures). In addition to possible FuseNet funding, students can apply for an IPP support grant (limited number) to cover the accommodation cost, reducing the fee to 250 EUR.

From 8–12 June, the 2026 edition of the DONES Xcitech School on Science and Technology, jointly organised by IFMIF-DONES and the Universidad de Granada will take place in Granada, Spain. The programme combines two complementary courses:

- AI for High-Impact Science and Engineering: directed by María Ortiz de Zúñiga, focused on emerging AI technologies and their applications in scientific infrastructures, engineering and fusion environments.

- DONES in Depth: directed by Ángel Ibarra, providing an in-depth overview of IFMIF-DONES and the broader fusion ecosystem, including accelerator systems, fusion materials, tritium modelling, liquid metals, safety, industrial development and Big Science infrastructures.

The programme includes contributions from key institutions and organisations in the fusion landscape, including IFMIF-DONES, Fusion for Energy (F4E), CERN, Clean Air Task Force, and several industrial partners linked to the European fusion ecosystem. For the first time, participants will also visit the IFMIF-DONES facilities in Escúzar.

In addition to FuseNet financial support for travel and subsistence for master students, there are two scholarships sponsored by F4E available, and a new “Pilar Aranda” scholarship funded by the University of Granada.
