After many months of preparations and two weeks of self isolation by all participants as a Covid-19 precaution measure, the time has finally come!
RV Pelagia will leave our harbour on Texel (NL) and set sail towards Greenland this weekend. The OSNAP (Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program) expedition allows NIOZ OCS physical oceanographer and chief scientist Dr Femke de Jong and her two PhD students Nora Fried and Elodie Duyck to recover, service and re-deploy moorings that monitor the Irminger current, as well as to deploy drifters which will be used to improve our knowledge of freshwater exchange pathways east of Greenland. This expedition will therefore be an important contribution to our understanding of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) transport across the subpolar North Atlantic.

NIOZ OCS PhD candidate Sabine Haalboom published her first first-author paper today!

The paper titled "Patterns of (trace) metals and microorganisms in the Rainbow hydrothermal vent plume at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge" serves as an important baseline study to characterise a natural hydrothermal vent plume prior to the onset of interference that potentially will be caused by deep sea mining of seafloor massive sulfides at these vent sites. Sabine Haalboom and her team show that hydrothermal vent plumes act as a unique chemically enriched environment where distinct and variable microbial habitats exist that must be taken into account in environmental impact assessments for deep sea mining activities.

Internship available at NIOZ OCS!

We're looking for a Msc Student who is interested in marine biogeochemical cycles.
During this research internship you will help to constrain the role of fish bones in sediment as a reservoir for phosphorus. You will identify fish bones from the sediment and then perform chemical analysis to determine their P (and other element) content to help to improve our understanding of marine P cycling.

NIOZ OCS PhD student Ulrike Hanz and her colleagues just published a paper about environmental impacts on benthic biodiversity in the oxygen minimum zones in the continental margins of Angola and Namibia.

They found thriving cold-water corals, which are able to survive due to a large food availability that can counteract the negative effects of high temperature and low oxygen concentrations, which are otherwise limiting factors for the growth of cold-water corals in other locations.

This is an important finding especially in the light of climate change, since temperatures are expected to rise and oxygen minimum zones will likely expand.

Postdoc vacancy at NIOZ Ocean Systems!

The department is looking for a Postdoc with a PhD in acoustics or related areas to work on a project titled "The effect of water quality on the acoustic footprint of ships” for 3 years (fulltime).
The first objective of this project is to obtain a high-quality dataset in which all relevant parameters affecting ship noise propagation are measured at sea. Second, the effect of individual and/or combined environmental parameter(s) on the occurrence and characteristics of micro-bubbles and cavitation will be investigated. Finally, this dataset will be used to direct future research in the laboratory and for the development of process-based models on cavitation and noise propagation

NIOZ OCS Alice Webb will publicly defend her PhD this Friday at Utrecht University!

Her research about the rates and mechanisms of coral dissolution by bioeroding sponges has shown that sponges are much more important in reef dissolution than previously thought. Their impact is also likely to increase even further with rising CO2 levels, tipping the dissolution-calcification balance of tropical coral reefs towards net dissolution.
