Sugarcane & design The growing Western demand for ecological and social-produced products made us look for new innovative ways to work.

We focused on a residual material that’s present within an existing production process. We’ve started this research to find out what could be the innovative ecological application of this waste material and how it can be transformed into modern product design. We ended up in India with the residue of sugarcane production, which is called bagasse. In India there is a major production of cane sugar

ArtEZ sugarcane workshop 09/01/2015

This year we started with giving a research workshop to the first year students at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Arnhem. Last week these upcoming designers researched our sugarcane. Different surprising results with laser-cuttings, heat presses, converted blenders, beautiful natural colorings, prints, stamps, you name it. Positive developments for the students and our research.

Monday we went back to the Netherlands. Here we immediately went to work to present the results of our field research in India at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. We hope to see you there!

Paper making 12/10/2014

Paper is being recycled into new paper sheet and waste paper is being transformed directly to new products by local craftsman. To color and decorate the paper only natural colors and pigments are being used. For the locals sugarcane is still being seen as a waste products, while similar techniques can be used to recycle the sugarcane waste.

For the further development of our sugarcane products we collaborated with local wood and stone carvers. Some of the results of the workshops in the SOS- children village are being transformed to press molds. The skilled craftsman are transforming the rangoli drawings the children made.

Paper mache 12/10/2014

A lot of craftsman are located In the surrounding of Pondicherry. The craft of paper mache is being used for Indian religious sculptures. This technique and knowledge will be very useful for the further development of our sugarcane products.

Tanjor painting 11/10/2014

Thanjavur is famous of the tanjor art so there we met with some of his talented painters. They showed us the process of making this traditional Indian paint craft. This technique and knowledge will be very useful for the further decoration of the sugarcane products.

SOS Children village 07/10/2014

Impression of the workshops that we have given in SOS Childeren village in Nagapattinam. Three creative days with the themes 'make it' fly, float or drive. This has given us a lot of insight about how these children in India play.

Just arrived in Chennai, found the sugarcane in every street. They press the cane and sell it as sugerwater, a very popular drink but we like the waste material more.
