In this issue focusing on Ukraine, Zapravka —a Ukrainian initiative supporting art residencies— shares insights from their first-hand experiences working in and around the front lines. The publication also features an account of a visit to Kharkiv by artist and DutchCulture | TransArtists advisor Lotte Geeven, alongside a broader reflection on spaces and acts of resistance by Mary Ann de Vlieg, a long-time advocate for displaced and at-risk artists. Additional contributors include Alma Salem, curator and Executive Director of the Syrian Political Feminist Movement; Heidi Vogels, artist and filmmaker; and Bojana Panevska, writer and researcher—both of whom also serve as advisors at DutchCulture | TransArtists.

🇳🇱 🇿🇦 As part of an orientation visit to South Africa, DutchCulture organised two workshops titled 𝙉𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨 𝘿𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚 in Johannesburg and Pretoria in September.

In these workshops, we explored various artist-in-residency programmes in South Africa, the Netherlands and beyond, for which we also dived into how to prepare an application. It was inspiring to meet so many South African artists interested in taking their practice international.

We would like to thank our hosts Meta Foundation , August House , Pretoria Art Museum and African National Association for the Visual Arts for having us.

OPEN CALL for a Dutch artist to participate in the Encheu Project, Brazil✨🌊 Deadline Monday 9 September

The Encheu project, an artist residency that brings together Brazil and the Netherlands in search of holistic solutions to rising sea levels and climate justice, is coming to LAB Procomum in November 2024.

This project is a partnership between Instituto Procomum, curator Giovanna Di Giacomo and the Dutch Embassy in Brazil, where designers and artists are invited to participate in the artistic residency process at LAB Procomum, exploring strategies for raising awareness and adapting to rising sea levels in Santos.

The aim is to promote knowledge exchange between Dutch and Brazilian water management systems and create artwork that addresses local impact and inspires sustainable solutions.

Who can apply? > Designers and artists, guided by the Procomum team, curators and experts in water management and climate activism.

📅 Residency: 2 weeks at LAB Procomum, Santos - São Paulo.
