A Call for Honest Conversations, Compassion, and Responsible Influence
Recently, a situation in Sierra Leone has sparked intense public debate. Publicrfigur, a young man who was openly gay, has chosen to step away from that identity and marry a woman. This decision has generated mixed reactions, deep conversations, and strong emotions across society.
Support for Publicrfigur, whether from individuals, organizations, religious groups, or influencers like Hawanatu konneh Network , who is supporting his wedding without judgment, is not mere public showmanship. It is historic and deeply impactful. It demonstrates the importance of giving people the space to reflect, heal, and redefine themselves without fear, mockery, or coercion.
What many people fail to understand is that a significant number of young men and women involved in same-s€x lifestyles in poor societies like ours have experienced ab₩se, tra₩ma, exploitation,Life time STI'S and other chronic diseases and even de@+h. In many cases, survival, poverty, hunger, social pressure, and promised benefits play a major role in shaping these choices. This reality deserves honest discussion, not denial or silence.
At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that some individuals genuinely struggle with deep se€×ual identity and psychological issues, areas that even science has not fully explained. As an SRHR advocate, I strongly believe that everyone deserves respect, regardless of their identity or the reasons behind it however, since my Nation is one of the poorest and less devin the world I am deeply concerned about how certain influences, when mixed with poverty and lack of education, can negatively affect young people and place the next generation at risk. This becomes especially dangerous when vulnerable boys and girls are exploited by adults who themselves are struggling with unresolved sexual and identity challenges.
Living in the Western world and working with various groups across Africa has shown me that this is not theory, it is lived reality. While genuine cases deserve empathy, acceptance and support, we must also be honest about how influence driven by financial gain or social survival can distort realities in fragile, uneducated and poor societies like Sierra Leone.
If a young man like Publicrfigur has taken such a bold step toward redefining his life, I believe organizations, agencies, religious institutions, and influencers should use his story responsibly, to encourage self-discovery, personal responsibility, and informed decision-making among young people, not shame or coercion.
I may not know what prompted Publicrfigur’s decision, but I believe it was intentional. I have seen many people quietly working on themselves away from social media. Some individuals undergo therapy for years with little or no changes, while others realize, through reflection or counseling, that a certain lifestyle was never truly who they were.
I sincerely thank HNK for the support and positive influence shown so far, and I respectfully urge continued support beyond the wedding day. Marriage alone does not end the journey. Counseling and therapy for both Publicrfigur and his wife will be important as they navigate emotional, social, and psychological challenges ahead.
To everyone reading this: same-s€x identity struggles are real, but self-knowledge is essential. Own your body. Understand your se€uality. Ask questions. Seek help. If services are unavailable, responsibly use your phone to research and learn. Do not allow hunger, pressure, or manipulation to push you into becoming someone you are not. Those with genuine challenges are already suffering, let us give them space and dignity.
Finally, I call on organizations, educators, and leaders to start talking openly about se€uality. Begin with teenagers. Teach them about their bodies, boundaries, and choices. Se€ual education is no longer a taboo, it is a necessity.
Silence is no longer an option.
