Saving species through collaboration with zoos and aquariums in education, research and conservation

The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) is the membership organisation for the European zoo and aquarium community. 400+ Members in 48 countries across Europe and the Middle East are work collaboratively on conservation, research and education for the protection of nature and its most iconic and vulnerable species. EAZA membership is open to all zoos and aquaria across Europe that comply with EAZA's standards. Member zoos and aquariums and other associate members can be found in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, the United States and the United Kingdom. The mission of the association is to promote cooperation for furthering regional collection planning and wildlife conservation, mainly through coordinated breeding programmes of wild animals such as the EAZA Ex situ Programme (EEP). The organisation promotes educational activities and advises the European Union, or other representative committees such as the European Parliament and the European Council.

🌍Conservation Education | 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗯𝘆!🐾

Across the EAZA community, zoos and aquariums are raising awareness about endangered species through educational activites and supporting conservation projects. 🙌

For National Bilby Day (in Australia), Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten Stuttgart's education team is putting the Greater Bilby (𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘴) in the spotlight. 🐾📚 Through an information stand, visitors can discover more about this Australian marsupial, the threats it faces and the zoo's contribution to its conservation.

As part of these efforts, Wilhelma also supports conservation partners 🤝like Save the Bilby Fund, which works to reintroduce the species to its native range. Recently, 150 bilbies returned to an area where they had become locally extinct!

As part of EAZA’s accreditation process, Members are re-assessed every five years through a rigorous peer-review process to ensure they continue to meet our advanced standards in animal welfare, conservation, education and research.

🌍 Conservation | The recording of our latest 𝗘𝗔𝗭𝗔 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿, "𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀," is now available! 🎥

In this important conversation, we explored the challenges, barriers, and opportunities for women in conservation, and how we can build stronger networks of peer support and mentorship across zoos and aquariums🤝. A must watch!

🌍Conservation | 𝗡𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝗔𝗭𝗔 𝘇𝗼𝗼𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲! 🐌

Conservationists, including teams from Chester Zoo and Zoo de Beauval, have just reintroduced hundreds of tiny snails to a rocky Atlantic island, following a breeding programme that pulled four species* back from the brink of extinction.

🚨When the last wild population was reduced to a handful, the Madeira government asked both zoos to step in and the surviving snails were carefully transported into their care for breeding.

Following close coordination, more than 300 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘳𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘶𝘭𝘢 and 270 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘭𝘺𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 have recently been released back onto the Desertas islands, part of the Madeiran archipelago, helping to restore habitat and support biodiversity. 🌱🐌

🤝This reintroduction is rooted in years of careful ex situ breeding and collaboration between zoos, conservation specialists and governmental authorities.
