Around 10 billion cigarette butts are thrown to the ground in the Netherlands every year 🚬

Tossing a cigarette butt on the ground is one of the most accepted forms of littering globally. Many butts are found in a radius of 5 meters from the waste bin.

Most smokers recognize cigarette litter as an environmental problem, but don't perceive cigarette butts as waste. However, cigarette butts are highly toxic, due to the chemicals contained in the to***co, paper, and filter ⚠️

Love your city? Bin your butts! 🙏

On the 5th of December we weren’t celebrating Sinterklaas, but presenting at WasteBuild 😀 Hundreds of stakeholders from across the built environment came together to discuss strategies and solutions for creating a circular built environment. Did you know construction alone accounts for up to 50% of raw material consumption and creates 20-30% of the total waste? 🏗

In the presentation, we explained the story of WASTED (a recycling project of CITIES) and our plans for the future. The bench on the slide is made from recycled construction waste ♻️ and carries the inscription “Ik zit stil bij plastic” (“I’m taking a moment to think about plastic”).

We also got to meet some other organizations that are engaging communities and creating value out of waste, such as , and . It was great to see all these innovative projects! 👌🏼

‘Tis the season to be jolly… AND CONSCIOUS

Christmas is undoubtedly one of the happiest times of the year🎄 Along with the holiday season, come the gifts for young and old ones 🎁🧸

A side effect of this period is over-consumption. Christmas is the peak of consumerism in western culture. In the Netherlands, most Christmas purchases are done in November or the first half of December 🛒🛍

At Cities Foundation we believe that empowered committed citizens can change that 💪 Solutions are not awaiting us, we need to create them! The same applies to Christmas over-consumerism.

Our Christmas campaign aims to shed sustainable light on this traditional holiday. Stay tuned 💚

Plastic bags were introduced to supermarkets in 1977. A plastic bag is used for an average of 12 minutes. We are so used to using plastic bags to carry things around, that we have taken it for granted. But we should start finding alternatives, because our planet can't take more of it 🌍

Plastic bags cause the death of many marine animals when they are mistaken for food. They also remain toxic after they break down into smaller and smaller pieces, thus contaminating the environment 🏴‍☠️

What do you think about the above-mentioned problem? We'd love to know your opinion. Let's all together be part of the solution 🐳

Not a sight for sore eyes, right? That’s the other side of Black Friday, which is only 3 days away! Too right it’s Black Friday: relentless consumption is trashing the planet ⚠️

Vast amounts of clothing, electronic items and plastic products which we consume contribute to a throwaway culture, wherein much waste is generated and too little is recycled. Last year, Dutch municipalities collected 8.5 billion kilograms of household waste. That is 494 kilograms of garbage per inhabitant of the Netherlands🇳🇱

Perhaps we can change Black Friday to Green Friday. This year, don’t buy because multinational companies and other people tempt you to buy. Act now! After all, there is no planet B 🌍🌷
