The most valuable engineer today is the one who can turn a completely ambiguous objective into a clear brief for an AI agent.

That’s what Liran Jdanov, one of the lecturers in our AI Performance Engineering program and Solutions Architect at Nebius, believes.

‘Agents are becoming very good at implementation. They can write code, generate tests, inspect logs, search documentation, refactor systems, and operate tools. But they are still much weaker at deciding what problem actually needs solving, identifying hidden constraints, and recognizing when a plausible-looking result is wrong,’ he says.

The better coding agents get, the more nuances engineers need to understand to make the most of them.

Here are 3 tips from our SWE Agent Advocate Denis Volkhonskiy:

💡 Don't put every instruction into AGENTS. md. Use both AGENTS. md and Skills: they serve different purposes. Knowing what belongs where makes a difference in how agents behave.

💡 If your agent isn't using a skill, don't blame the agent. More often than not, the issue is the skill itself. Small changes to how you write a skill can dramatically affect whether an agent discovers and uses it.

💡 More agents don't automatically mean better results. Running agents in parallel can speed things up, but it can also lead to duplicated work, conflicting decisions, and harder debugging. Good multi-agent workflows need clear boundaries and control.

Yesterday, our Tel Aviv office felt busier than usual – we celebrated Graduation Day for our AI Performance Engineering cohort.

160 people, four months, five modules of lectures at the Tel Aviv University campus, and hours of hardcore homework. It all led to this: getting everyone back together to chat, check out student projects, hear from industry speakers, look back at the program, and, of course, take home well-earned shiny diplomas.

For the official part of the evening, we heard from Victor Shafran (Nebius) on the engineers AI still needs, Prof. Elena Bunina (Nebius, Bar-Ilan University) on education in the AI era, Tal Lipka (Nebius) on AI talent, Etay Levanon (Israel Innovation Authority רשות החדשנות) on building Israel's AI talent edge, and Roy Granit (Compugen) on AI agents in biotech.

… and even with an agenda this packed, our graduates and the team still got time to catch up with one another!

Huge thanks to Sergey Grebe ✔ for managing the program, Pini Koplovitch for making sure everything ran smoothly, and Chana Shefel for leading the community. Liran Jdanov, one of the lecturers in our AI Performance Engineering program, knows everything (and a little bit more) about working at the intersection of AI and infrastructure.

🌊 He's also got a superpower: he's an avid kitesurfer, which ended up being surprisingly useful when it came to teaching.

As a Senior Solutions Architect at Nebius, Liran works with his team to optimize training pipelines, design HPC/ML architectures for production, and help customers optimize pipeline performance and scalability to ensure efficient utilization of cloud resources and services powered by Nebius AI.

In the AI Performance Engineering program, he helped develop and deliver the MLOps module, covering production deployment and scaling of AI systems, MLOps tools, experiment management, and monitoring.

‘Preparing and delivering lectures for Nebius Academy was challenging – MLOps is a pretty fast-moving field where best practices are always evolving. My kiteboarding experience turned out to be unexpectedly relevant: it taught me how to adapt quickly and stay in control, even when conditions change,’ Liran says.

This time, we skipped slides, homework, and Q&As entirely in favor of blankets on the grass, snacks, and simple chats.
