Today, we are sharing some photos from when a few members of the PAMCI team visited the Montego Bay Cultural Center in Jamaica. Like the Corn Islands and the Caribbean Coast of Central America, Jamaica and other islands in the Antilles have a complex history and rich cultural heritage of various Indigenous peoples, such as the Taíno and Afro-descendants from various ethnic groups in West and Central Africa, including the Akan, Igbo, Kongo, Fon, Ewe, Yoruba, and Ibibio peoples, among others. Jamaica, known to its First Peoples as "Xaymaca", meaning "the land of wood and water" in Taíno, was initially colonized by the Spanish empire in 1509 and then by the British empire in 1655, until it gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. As a colony of the British West Indies, the Colony of Jamaica exercised control over several territories in the Caribbean, including the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Cayman Islands, British Honduras (now Belize), the Bay Islands (now Honduras), and La Mosquitia, which included the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina (now Colombia), the eastern coast of Honduras, and the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, including the Miskito Cays, the Pearl Cays, and, of course, the Corn Islands. 🇯🇲🇹🇨🇰🇾🇧🇿🇭🇳🇳🇮🇨🇴
🇯🇲🇹🇨🇰🇾🇧🇿🇭🇳🇳🇮🇨🇴
