The giant, reputably historical and re-known Government Day Secondary School, Kofar Kibo, Zaria, was established on the 27th day of September, in the year 1977. As the record has, the first set then, graduated in the year 1983, respectively.
Then, the school, popularly known as Government Day, or "Goman Day" in the local palens, has had series of highly trained teachers and instructors, many of which were foreigners from the West, UK inclusive. However, there were many of our indigenous citizens, competent enough to have joined in the service as at that material time. Few include: the passed Provost to the then Federal College of Education Zaria, Dr. Mukhtar Ibrahim Macciษo, Malama Hausa, Mal. Ibrahim Physics and many more...
The school was the very first mixed "Government Day School" in Zone 1 of Kaduna State, admitting a mixed s*x students across Zaria and environs. It's reported to be a very top decision for the state government to approve its establishment as "day school" as of that time, comparing all of the others which were predominantly boarding. Few were Kufena College, Barewa College, Alhudahuda College and the like...
In an Interview with few of the first set of students, among which is Alh. Dauda Aliyu Biu was among, revealed that most of them were rejected with alacrity, the decision of their parents and guardians, to register them to a day school, as it was an experimental one for that matter, as against many of their friends.
Students then, male and females, wore short-neakers to school, by foot, regardless of the distance, with exceptions of few, who were brought on motor bikes and bicycles. Those who could ride, were supplied with bicycles, to ease them long distance walk to and fro of the school.
Years later, girls were withdrawn from the school, leaving only boys. Perhaps, due to the establishment of girls secondary schools in the environs, like GGSS Kofan Gayan, GGS Commercial, GGSS Dogon Bauchi and at higher level, Women Teachers' College, as at that time, to mention but a few.
Today, the story is rather appealing, and more celebrative, as girls are back again, school fenced, more classes contemporary structures of science, biology and books laboratories. One notable shift, is the effort of the old boys to assist the school, with alma-mata being reunited, notable among which is the Government Secondary School Old Boys Association ( ).
