Bayelsa Medical University continues to make remarkable strides on the global stage as the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dimie Ogoina, delivered the prestigious James Hakim Memorial Lecture at the INTEREST 2026 Conference in Tanzania.

In his presentation titled “HIV and Mpox: A Syndemic Lens,” Prof. Ogoina provided critical scientific insights into the intersection of HIV and mpox, emphasizing the need for African-led research, strengthened disease surveillance, and equitable access to healthcare interventions. His participation at one of Africa’s leading scientific conferences further reinforces BMU’s growing reputation as a rising global institution in medical education, research, and public health leadership.

This international recognition highlights the University’s commitment to innovation, impactful research, and strategic global engagement under the ASPIRE Agenda. Bayelsa Medical University, through its Career Service Centre, successfully hosted a One-Day Capacity Building Training on May 14, 2026, reaffirming the university’s commitment to academic excellence, graduate employability, and global competitiveness.

The training brought together students, university leadership, government agencies, development partners, and industry professionals to equip students with practical skills needed for today’s evolving professional world. From career planning, résumé writing, and digital competencies to Artificial Intelligence, professional networking, Occupational Health & Safety, and workplace ethics, the programme focused on preparing students beyond the classroom.

Speaking at the event, university leaders emphasized that success in today’s workforce requires more than certificates — it demands communication, leadership, adaptability, professionalism, and continuous learning.

The programme also featured valuable contributions from the Ministry of Labour, National Directorate of Employment, Teachers Without Borders, National Identity Management Commission, and other partners who highlighted opportunities for skills development, entrepreneurship, and career advancement.

A major highlight was the emphasis on global visibility, responsible use of AI tools like ChatGPT, and the importance of building strong professional profiles and networks.

As certificates were presented to final-year students, the university reaffirmed its dedication to producing graduates who are academically sound, professionally competent, globally competitive, and ready to lead transformational change in healthcare and beyond.

GOING GLOBAL-BMU ACHIEVES FULL ACCREDITATION FOR MBBS AND HEALTHCARE ADMINISTRATION PROGRAMMES, REINFORCING THE GLOBAL ACADEMIC VISION OF T H E P E R F O R M I N G V C , P R O F . D I M I E O G O I N A ( T I M E 1 0 0 H O N O R E E ) .

The Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) proudly announces the successful full accreditation of its Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) programme, alongside its Health Administration programme. This accreditation marks a defining moment in the ASPIRE Agenda’s pursuit of academic excellence, quality assurance, and global competitiveness in medical and health sciences education.

The accreditation, granted by the National Universities Commission on the 7th of April 2026 following a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process, confirms that both programmes meet and exceed the prescribed national standards in curriculum delivery, faculty strength, infrastructure, clinical training, and institutional governance and will run for a period of 5 years. The MBBS programme, as the flagship of the University, has demonstrated outstanding compliance with critical benchmarks required for the training of medical professionals. In the same vein, the Health Administration programme, was commended for its strategic importance in producing skilled professionals equipped to manage and strengthen modern healthcare systems.
Reacting to this milestone, Professor Dimie Ogoina, Vice-Chancellor expressed profound joy and excitement over the development, describing it as a validation of the University’s vision, resilience, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
The Vice-Chancellor further commended the collective efforts of staff, students, Council, and all stakeholders whose dedication and support made this achievement possible. He said “this is not just an accreditation, it is the result of bold determination, keeping the promise I made during my inauguration : “In two years I will transform the Bayelsa Medical University”

The Directorate of Research and Development recently visited the Bioresource Development Centre (BIODEC), Odi, to build meaningful collaboration in biotechnology, training, and research. The visit opened doors for student internships, staff development, joint research, and shared use of facilities.

Both institutions are also exploring a formal partnership through an MoU, marking a big move towards advancing research, innovation, and development for the benefit of our people.
