Over the weekend, we reflected on something important:
discipline should build, not break.

Not every correction produces growth.
Some corrections silence, shrink, and wound.

And this is where we must pause as parents.

In many African homes, respect is everything and rightly so.
But sometimes, without meaning to, we begin to equate respect with silence.

A child speaks — we call it rudeness.
A child explains — we call it talking back.
A child insists — we call it disobedience.

But here is the question we must ask ourselves:

Are we correcting the child…
or are we slowly shutting down their voice?

Because when discipline becomes harsh, constant, or dismissive,
it stops being constructive, it becomes destructive.

And a child who is constantly shut down may:

- stop expressing themselves
- hide mistakes instead of learning from them
- struggle with confidence
- fear communication instead of embracing it

That is not the goal of discipline.

True discipline should:

- guide
- teach
- shape
- build character

Not silence.

Yes, children must learn respect but tone, timing, and boundaries matter.
But they must also learn to:

- think
- ask questions
- express themselves
- grow in confidence

And that only happens in an environment where they are heard, not just corrected.

At Cheers International Academy, we believe:

«A child can be disciplined and expressive.
A child can be respectful and confident.»

So as we go into this new week, let’s be intentional:

Before you correct, ask:

- Will this build my child or break them?
- Am I teaching or reacting?
- Am I guiding their voice… or shutting it down?

Let our discipline produce children who are:

- respectful
- confident
- truthful
- emotionally secure

Because the goal is not just obedience —
it is wholeness.

True discipline is often misunderstood.

It is not simply about correcting behaviour in the moment, it is about preparing a child for life. Yet many approaches focus on immediate control rather than long-term growth, and that’s where the disconnect begins.

When a child is constantly punished without being taught, the outcome is not discipline. Instead, it may produce adults who conceal mistakes, fear consequences, or lack the confidence to make sound decisions.

So when discipline doesn’t seem to be working, the issue may not be the child’s attitude. It may be the method being used.

Discipline, in its true form, is a teaching process. It is intentional, consistent, and focused on building understanding that lasts beyond the moment.

Discipline is not: Shouting
Beating
Over-explaining
Controlling

Discipline is teaching.
I.e Building systems
Creating structure
Developing skills
Shaping identity

The word discipline comes from the Latin disciplina—which means teaching, learning, and instruction.

When we shift our focus from punishment to teaching, we don’t just correct behaviour. We will raise individuals who know how to think, choose wisely, and lead themselves well.
